Job Description

Position Overview The Labor Relations Manager in the nuclear sector plays a pivotal role in fostering cooperative and productive relationships between company management and unionized employees. Operating within one of the world’s most highly regulated and safety-sensitive industries, this individual will serve as a liaison between company leadership and labor organizations, ensuring both compliance with regulatory mandates and the promotion of a positive workplace culture. The successful candidate will be tasked with supporting ongoing negotiations, managing disputes and grievances, developing labor strategies, and maintaining effective communication. This role demands a deep understanding of both labor law and the unique challenges of the nuclear industry, including its technical, ethical, and safety considerations.
Key Responsibilities Union Negotiations and Collective Bargaining:
Act as the principal company representative in collective bargaining sessions with unions representing plant workers, technicians, engineers, and other staff. Develop negotiation strategies that align company goals with regulatory requirements and industry standards. Analyze, draft, and recommend contract proposals, modifications, and settlement agreements. Collaborate with legal counsel to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor regulations.
Dispute Resolution and Grievance Management:
Serve as the first point of contact for union representatives raising grievances or disputes. Investigate, mediate, and resolve issues in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and company policy. Document grievance proceedings and outcomes to ensure transparency and accountability. Coordinate with HR, legal, and operations teams as needed to address and resolve disputes.
Strategy Development and Policy Implementation:
Advise executive leadership on labor relations strategies, trends, and best practices. Develop and implement policies and programs that foster a fair, equitable, and safe work environment. Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes affecting labor relations and recommend proactive responses.
Stakeholder Communication and Relationship Building:
Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with union leaders and workforce representatives. Communicate labor relations policies and collective bargaining agreements to managers and employees. Provide training to supervisors and HR staff on effective labor relations, contract compliance, and dispute avoidance. Represent the organization at industry forums, regulatory hearings, and community outreach events.
Compliance and Documentation:
Ensure full compliance with all pertinent labor laws, safety regulations, and nuclear industry policies. Maintain accurate records of contract negotiations, grievance resolutions, arbitration proceedings, and related documentation. Support audits and inspections by regulatory authorities such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
Safety and Ethics:
Champion a culture of safety and ethical conduct in all labor-management interactions. Work closely with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams to integrate safety considerations into labor agreements and workplace practices. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Labor Relations, Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field. A master’s degree or professional certification (e.g., SHRM, SPHR) is preferred. Minimum of 7 years of experience in labor relations, with at least 3 years in a construction, energy, or similarly regulated industrial environment. Nuclear sector experience is highly desirable. Expertise in collective bargaining, contract administration, and grievance resolution. Thorough understanding of labor laws and regulations relevant to nuclear energy, including OSHA, NRC, and NLRB standards. Demonstrated ability to foster constructive working relationships with union leaders and workforce representatives. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong analytical skills, with the capacity to synthesize complex regulatory, operational, and human factors. Unwavering commitment to safety, integrity, and confidentiality.
