Job Description
We are a boutique estate planning and elder law firm with offices in New Jersey and New York, serving individuals and families and advising on complex estate and business planning issues. We are looking for an attorney who finds the intersection of federal tax law and trusts and estates practice genuinely interesting, not merely tolerable. If you are the person in the room who has actually read the relevant Treasury regulations, who gravitates toward the harder questions (What does the basis consistency rule actually require here? Is this a completed gift? Should this be structured as a grantor or nongrantor trust?), and who finds deep research more satisfying than surface-level answers, this role was written for you. What you'll do Tax research and analysis . Delve into complex federal and state tax issues arising in estate planning engagements, including income tax, gift tax, estate tax, GST tax, and the interplay among them. We expect thorough, well-reasoned work product, not just conclusions. Document drafting . Prepare sophisticated estate planning documents, including irrevocable trusts (such as grantor and nongrantor trust structures, GRATs, SLATs, ILITs, CRTs, and other advanced planning vehicles), as well as wills, revocable living trusts, powers of attorney, and other ancillary instruments. Precision and internal consistency matter here. Strategy development . Work directly with senior attorneys on planning strategies for high-net-worth clients, including business owners, real estate investors, blended families, and individuals with complex multistate or international considerations. What we're looking for J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from an accredited law school Admitted to practice in New Jersey and/or New York, or eligible for admission 5+ years of experience in estate planning, trusts and estates, or tax law; firm, government, and academic backgrounds will all be considered Demonstrated ability to research and analyze complex tax issues independently; you know how to find the answer when it is not obvious Strong drafting skills, with close attention to structure, defined terms, and internal consistency Comfort with the technical side of estate planning and exceptional attention to detail Organized, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple matters at the same time Familiarity with New Jersey and New York estate planning nuances What we offer Competitive compensation commensurate with experience Comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, a retirement plan, and paid time off A collegial and supportive environment where people are respected for the quality of their thinking Real mentorship and a path toward senior responsibility in a firm that is actively growing Work-life balance we actually mean: serious work, without a burnout culture
