Job Description

Northern Nevada Legal Aid (NNLA), formerly known as Washoe Legal Services, is seeking a Spanish-speaking, Civil Law Self-Help (CLSH) Facilitator. The Self-Help Facilitator provides legal information, educational materials, and training to self-represented individuals regarding civil law court rules, court procedures, and legal information on various legal topics. Because the Civil Law Self-Help Facilitator interacts directly with a high number of clients throughout the workday, the applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have some law office or other legal experience, however, NNLA will train the right candidate for this position. The candidate must already know the fundamentals of working in an office: phone etiquette, customer service, copying, filing, emailing, and computer literacy. A strong attendance record and consistent punctuality are expected. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet and welcome walk-in clients at NNLA's Civil Law Self-Help Center located at Reno Justice Court, 1 Sierra St, 1st Floor, Reno, NV 89501.
  • Help identify and complete correct legal forms for self-represented individuals in a variety of civil legal matters (i.e., family law, landlord/tenant, non-domestic & domestic protective orders, small claims, records sealing, powers of attorney, name changes, etc.),
  • Interpret and translate for Spanish-speaking clients as needed,
  • Ensure completion of appropriate intake forms and enter client data daily into NNLA's database,
  • Respond to phone calls, voice mails and emails regarding requests for self-help assistance,
  • Help litigants with electronic filing by educating them regarding procedures, locating forms, and navigating the e-filing system,
  • Route questions from Reno Justice Court staff to Self-Help attorneys,
  • Disinfect Civil Law Self-Help area at the end of the day and as otherwise needed,
  • Occasionally cover intake for other NNLA programs when needed,
  • Travel to Washoe County Detention Center (Jail) to assist inmates with notarizing powers of attorney and/or delivering self-help materials to them weekly until fully trained and then monthly after,
  • Respond to jail KITES and input information into Legal Server
  • Occasionally help complete state, city, municipal, government, agency, nonprofit organization, or other community partners' forms related to NNLA services and programs,
  • Other duties assigned as needed. Qualifications
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required,
  • Ability to obtain a notary certification,
  • Have strong communication skills, both written and verbal. An empathetic yet effective communicator with a positive attitude who can explain complex legal matters to clients in a way they can understand,
  • Be comfortable working with individuals of diverse backgrounds, including those from different cultures, socio-economic statuses, ages, genders, disabilities, and vulnerable populations,
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable with direct client contact while maintaining a professional demeanor,
  • Be able to take initiative and work independently, as well as be a part of a great team of caring individuals providing an invaluable community service,
  • Desire to problem-solve, multitask, make decisions efficiently, and refer clients to resources as appropriate,
  • Preference may be given to those familiar with the practice of law, interviewing clients, and basic knowledge of how local courts operate, but not required,
  • Prior experience working with low-income individuals, victims of trauma, crime, or domestic violence, and/or legal case management software are also desirable.
Salary/Benefits Position is a full-time, non-exempt position, with a salary range of $20-$25 an hour, to be determined based upon experience and qualifications. NNLA promotes a positive work-life balance by offering a 40-hour work week, 12 paid holidays per year, and a generous Personal Time Off (PTO) program that starts accruing immediately. NNLA offers a competitive benefits package, which pays 100% of the employee Medical, Dental, Vision and Life plans, along with paying 75% of dependents benefit premium. In addition, NNLA has a 401(k)-matching program, an Employee Assistance Program, Flexible Spending Account, Dependent Care Account, and supplemental benefits. Formerly known as Washoe Legal Services, Northern Nevada Legal Aid (NNLA) is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Washoe County, Nevada, which was established in 1965 and has been in continuous operation since. NNLA provides Northern Nevada's vulnerable populations access to justice (regardless of their ability to pay), to protect their rights, safety, and family stability through the expansion of access to legal justice in Northern Nevada NNLA plays a critical role in helping individuals facing eviction or other housing issues to know their rights. We promote the safety and stability of domestic violence victims and their children. We represent abused and neglected children in foster care proceedings and elderly and disabled adults in guardianship proceedings. We serve immigrants who are victims of crime and domestic or sexual violence. In 2022, Northern Nevada Legal Aid assisted in over 10,500 legal matters, including civil law self-help services to 1,980 individuals. NNLA's purpose is to achieve justice for those whose voices might otherwise not be heard, to empower individuals to advocate for themselves, and to make positive changes in the communities we serve.
