Job Description:
Bridge to Justice (B2J) is a 501(c)(3) Colorado nonprofit law firm established in 2013. Its mission is to bridge the gap between legal needs and legal access with affordable high quality legal services. B2J provides civil legal services to low•and moderate-income Colorado residents in the areas of family law, civil protection orders, eviction defense and public benefits, B2J is contracted with the County of Boulder to provide legal services and representation to residents who are facing an eviction. This position offers attorneys the opportunity to engage in a full range of litigation practice: from one time advise only calls, mediation/alternative dispute resolution, initial in-person advisements and limited representation, drafting pleadings and motions, discovery, trial advocacy and appellate advocacy—with a flexible schedule and competitive hourly rate when compared to similar public interest contract positions. Boulder County has become one of the most important jurisdictions in the country for defending the rights of tenants facing eviction. A successful applicant would be committed to: attending most Friday eviction dockets. Filing answers and/or counterclaims, often on an expedited basis. negotiating with opposing counsel in a fast-paced environment on as many as 3-5 cases at a time. Representing clients at trial and on appeal, when appropriate; and Keeping apprised of recent developments in landlord/tenant law in Colorado; Applicants that will be given the highest priority are those who are also willing to: field requests for pre-return hearing advisements or mediations throughout the week. research, prepare, and test novel legal theories and share their results with other contract attorneys to establish positive legal precedent for tenants in Boulder County and possibly throughout the state Bridge to Justice has a professional malpractice insurance policy to which it adds all contract attorneys, but contract attorneys are encouraged to carry their own independent policies. Qualifications/Requirements Licensed to practice law in State of Colorado At least two (2) years of trial and/or civil litigation experience Ability to work remotely and independently Ability to e-file through the Colorado Courts E-Filing System, as well as track all litigation paperwork, client forms, surveys, case outcomes, and other necessary data Ability to draft Engagement, Disengagement, Declination Letters, and/or other client management documents and communications Ability to maintain personal timesheets and to submit timely invoices Willingness to cooperate with a network of passionate attorneys, paralegals, mediators, and community advocates to help establish positive legal precedents for tenants Willingness to attend program meetings (at least once quarterly) and trainings arranged by
