Job Description
Employment Law Attorney Covington, LA 70433 Hybrid work From $150,000 a year - Full-time From $150,000 a year - Full-time I'm hiring a senior associate attorney to independently manage and litigate, under my supervision, a portion of my plaintiff-side employment docket. The cases include wrongful termination, discrimination, retaliation, hostile work environment, pay violations, reviewing employment agreements, and so on. As described below, I offer a base pay of $75,000 per year, plus a portion of the firm's contingency fees earned on the cases assigned to you. Based on the firm's current statistics, assuming you meet your benchmarks, you should earn at least $150,000 in total pay your first year. You'll be assigned a set number of cases, and you'll receive new cases as you resolve the old ones. This position is designed to be low stress, yet very rewarding both professionally and financially. There is no billable hour requirement (seriously). I really do not care how many hours you work so long as you effectively manage and litigate your cases. My practice is mostly in federal court. I would prefer a senior associate with meaningful litigation experience, but I do not require prior employment-law experience if you are otherwise a strong litigator (although employment law experience is a strong plus). I will train the right person to become an excellent federal-court civil litigator. My ideal candidate is someone with 5+ years of litigation experience (employment law experience is a plus) who wants to transition into a full-time, plaintiff-side, federal-court employment law practice. This is principally a remote position. You will occasionally be required to travel within Louisiana for depositions, court appearances, mediations, and other meetings. I may have you travel to the office to meet me one or two days per month as work or supervision requires. Compensation and benefits You will receive a guaranteed base salary of $75,000 per year, plus additional compensation equal to 35% of the firm's net, earned contingency fees on cases assigned to you. The guaranteed salary also functions as an advance against your fee-based compensation, meaning you receive additional pay only after your 35% share of assigned-case fees exceeds $75,000 in a given year. For example, if your 35% share of assigned-case fees is $70,000 in a year, you will still receive your guaranteed $75,000 salary. If your 35% share is $100,000, you receive your $75,000 salary plus an additional $25,000 in fee-based compensation. If your 35% share is $300,000, you receive your $75,000 salary plus an additional $225,000 in fee-based compensation. Based on the firm's current statistics, assuming you meet your benchmarks, you should earn approximately $150,000 in total pay your first year. Your fee-based compensation (per case) will be paid on the next pay date after the firm collects its contingency fee. There is no cap on your annual fee-based compensation. As an incentive to learn, grow, and remain with the firm, your fee-sharing percentage will increase for each year you remain employed with the firm. In addition to compensation, you will receive 15 days of paid vacation per year, plus additional paid time off when the firm is closed for major holidays, such as New Year's Day, Easter, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and similar holidays. You will be expected to actually use your vacation. I want you to enjoy your work and your time off. My firm will pay for your professional liability insurance, annual CLE requirements, legal research subscriptions (including Westlaw), and other necessary professional tools and subscriptions. More about me and the work I am a full-time employment lawyer and board certified in the field by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization. I almost always represent employees, which means we are almost always representing plaintiffs. Roughly 75% of my practice is in Louisiana federal district court, 15% is in the U.S. Fifth Circuit, and the remaining 10% is divided among Louisiana civil service commissions, Louisiana district courts, and similar forums. You will be expected to perform the following sorts of legal work while under my supervision: Draft and file EEOC and federal EEO charges Draft and file federal and state lawsuits Prepare and conduct your own written discovery Respond to your opponent's written discovery Take all necessary depositions, including corporate depositions Defend our client in their own deposition Respond to and oppose dispositive motions (motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgments, and so on) Draft and file pre-trial motions and pleadings Prepare for federal bench and jury trials Try federal bench and jury trials as my second chair associate Prepare and file appellate briefs to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Give oral argument at both federal district court and the U.S. Fifth Circuit Litigate the same sort of issues described above in both Louisiana state district and appellate courts, and before Louisiana civil service boards Negotiate settlements. Prepare for and participate in mediations and federal settlement conferences. Talk to clients. Talk to opposing counsel. Communicate with judges and court staff. Communicate with our own expert witnesses and other vendors. Communicate with me. Draft letters and other correspondence. Prepare subpoenas. File documents. Keep an accurate calendar. Be an excellent ambassador for my firm and myself. Over time, become a subject matter expert in your field Learn how to screen and evaluate cases Learn the business of employment law and how to develop new clients Minimal Qualifications You must possess the following credentials and experiences: A Louisiana law license At least three years of civil or criminal litigation experience in any field in either state or federal court You have taken at least 5 depositions You have defended at least 5 depositions You have filed at least 5 motions or oppositions in either state or federal court You are willing to independently manage your own docket of cases while under my supervision Preferred Qualifications In addition to above, I will give preference to applicants who have these additional experiences: You have employment law experience You have litigated your own cases as lead attorney You have sat first or second chair in a jury trial to verdict Application and interview Please include with your application a writing sample and your current resume which includes both your work history and the law school you attended, your date of graduation, and your GPA or class rank. No one will be excluded from the application process based on school or rank (your experience is more important to me), but I'd like to know the information in advance. The successful applicant will be asked to start around July 1.
