Our entity structure, classifications, and accounting are established and maintained, and we are now focused on ensuring that our prior and future tax filings are fully compliant. We are seeking a part‑time, in‑house Tax Attorney who is also a CPA to conduct internal tax auditing and support ongoing compliance, including some not‑for‑profit filing work. About the Role This role is primarily an internal tax audit and compliance position , not a client‑development or litigation role.
The main responsibilities will be:
Conducting a retroactive, detailed review of the last 3-4 years of tax filings for the business and related entities. Confirming compliance and identifying any errors, omissions, or planning opportunities. Preparing or overseeing any corrections or amended returns as needed. Handling 2025 tax filings and helping ensure ongoing compliance thereafter. The right candidate will be comfortable working independently with management, using existing accounting records and classifications to evaluate tax reporting, and recommending practical corrective actions where appropriate. Key Responsibilities Perform an internal tax audit of prior‑year returns (approximately the last 3-4 tax years) for the business and related entities/owners. Review federal and state income, payroll, sales/use, and any applicable local tax filings for accuracy and compliance. Identify potential issues, risks, missed elections, or missed deductions/credits and recommend whether to file amended returns or other corrective filings. Coordinate and oversee preparation and filing of any amended or superseding returns, including supporting schedules and disclosures. Prepare and/or review 2025 returns for the business and related entities, ensuring consistency with accounting records and applicable tax rules. Review and support not‑for‑profit filings (e.g., Form 990 and related state filings) for affiliated or related organizations, focusing on compliance and completeness.
Work from completed accounting records:
verify that tax reporting aligns with the existing chart of accounts, classifications, and financial statements; propose adjustments where needed from a tax perspective. Assist in responding to any IRS or state notices related to prior or current‑year filings, including drafting responses and organizing supporting documentation. Develop or refine internal checklists and timelines for recurring tax compliance (federal, state, payroll, sales/use, and any not‑for‑profit obligations). Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to ownership/management, including risk level and cost/benefit of corrective actions. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school. Active license to practice law in Illinois, in good standing. Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. 4+ years of recent, substantive tax experience (law firm, accounting firm, or in‑house); experience with closely held businesses is strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience reviewing prior‑year returns, preparing amended returns, and working through compliance "cleanup" projects. Familiarity with not‑for‑profit tax filings (Form 990 series and related state filings). Strong understanding of federal and Illinois tax rules for businesses and their owners. Comfort working with existing accounting systems and classifications; ability to translate financials into accurate and compliant tax filings. Detail‑oriented, organized, and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Schedule and Work Arrangement Approximately 20 hours per week. In‑office presence required at least 2-3 days per week. Hybrid flexibility for research, analysis, and drafting work once oriented. Ability to flex hours slightly during key deadline periods or heavy review phases.
