Job Description
Senior Attorney - Criminal DefensePosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Senior Attorney specializing in criminal defense to lead complex felony and misdemeanor cases, provide high-quality client representation, and mentor junior attorneys. The ideal candidate will manage a heavy caseload, develop defense strategy from intake through trial, negotiate favorable resolutions when appropriate, and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards. This role requires courtroom leadership, excellent legal writing and research skills, and a commitment to zealous advocacy on behalf of clients.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and manage a docket of criminal cases including pretrial investigation, hearings, plea negotiations, and trials.
Conduct thorough legal research and prepare persuasive motions, briefs, and legal memoranda.
Develop and implement case strategies, including trial preparation, witness preparation, and evidence assessment.
Represent clients at arraignments, bail hearings, plea hearings, trials, sentencing, and appeals as necessary.
Advise clients on legal options, potential outcomes, and case strategy; maintain regular client communication and case updates.
Negotiate plea agreements and settlements with prosecutors while protecting client interests and seeking favorable outcomes.
Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and investigators; review work product and provide constructive feedback.
Coordinate with investigators, expert witnesses, and forensic practitioners to build defense theories and challenge prosecution evidence.
Ensure compliance with all procedural rules, ethical obligations, and statutory requirements; manage case files and deadlines effectively.
Prepare clients and witnesses for courtroom testimony and handle in-court advocacy with professionalism and poise.
QualificationsJuris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in Oregon.
Minimum of 5 years of criminal defense litigation experience, including significant courtroom and trial experience.
Proven experience in felony and misdemeanor defense, including DUI and drug-related cases preferred.
Strong legal research and writing skills with demonstrated experience drafting motions, briefs, and pleadings.
Excellent trial advocacy and courtroom presentation skills; record of conducting jury and bench trials.
Demonstrated ability in case management, client representation, negotiation, and plea bargaining.
Experience assessing and challenging evidence, working with forensic experts, and preparing trial exhibits.
Familiarity with criminal procedure, evidence rules, sentencing guidelines, and legal compliance obligations.
Strong negotiation skills and experience in settlement negotiation and resolving cases favorably.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to counsel clients under stress and manage difficult conversations.
Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative, results-oriented team environment.
