Supervising Attorney - General Law
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Ithaca office of LawNY® seeks to fill an opening for a Supervising Attorney in our General Law Unit. The Attorney will provide direct legal representation to claimants appealing denials of Supplemental Security Ie (SSI) and Social Security Disability (SSDI) claims. This work will include administrative appeals within the Social Security Administration appeals process, as well as litigation in federal court. In addition, the Attorney will supervise up to five staff members, consisting of Staff Attorneys and Paralegals who are providing direct representation to clients on government benefits issues (SSI/SSDI, unemployment insurance, public assistance and SNAP), elder law, and education law. We encourage applicants with a wide range of substantive legal experience to apply. We expect those who fill this position will grow and adapt their practice to the needs of themunity and theanization, and place an emphasis on supervision skills and the ability to practice in multiple forums. The candidate must have the caring, patience, and emotional maturity to help people with low ie ovee crisis situations.
QUALIFICATIONS
These are the basic requirements for the position. Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York State. Three (3) years experience providing legal services as a licensed attorney. Demonstratedmitment of service to people with low-ie.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE
The beginning salary for a Supervising Attorney at LawNY with 3 years of experience is $85,000 and the salary for a Supervising Attorney with 30 years of experience is $116,600. Salary will be based on experience. LawNY is a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan iveness program(PSLF). RESPONSIBILITIES
These are the most significant responsibilities and primary functions of the position. Provide respectful culturallypetent legal services to clients with low ie and client groups including advice, negotiation, litigation and administrative advocacy. Manage multiple tasks and deadlines while supervising caseload of supervisees and coordinate the periodic review of the cases. Develop and maintain specialized knowledge of administrative law and federal court practice as it relates to claims for SSI and SSDI benefits. Identify leadership development and mentoring opportunities for supervisees and train less-experienced attorneys, paralegals and/or other staff in their pursuit of career advancement. Create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for supervisees. Build relationships and collaborate with human services providers, non-profitanizations,munity groups, and impactedmunity members as well as the courts, administrative tribunals, and the private bar to address legal problems within ourmunity. Take responsibility for proper grant management requirements, program reporting, timekeeping, file maintenance, case closing, andpliance review. Maintain a high level of professionalpetence through attendance of training sessions, seminars and conferences and individual efforts to keep abreast of current developments in the area of poverty law and the application of an equity lens to client service.
