Job Description

Job Summary Provides comprehensive legal counsel to the University, including advising on regulatory and compliance matters, negotiating and drafting agreements, supporting litigation, and analyzing laws and policies to guide institutional decision-making. Qualifications J.D. from an accredited law school and a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a practicing attorney. Must be a member of the Tennessee State Bar or admissible within six months of hire. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time. Responsibilities Performs responsible legal work involving representation and the provision of advice on legal matters affecting the University including, but not limited to, policies, procedures, rules and regulations, and laws pertaining to students and employees, real estate transactions, contracts and grants, tax matters, worker's compensation, liability and insurance matters, intellectual property, athletic compliance, public records, and other laws and regulations; escalates issues, as appropriate, to University Counsel or Associate University Counsel. Develops, reviews and/or negotiates agreements (e.g. contracts, leases, MOUs, grants) on behalf of the University in collaboration with University faculty and administrators and manage issues related to the University's intellectual property rights. Works with the Office of the Attorney General of Tennessee in defending lawsuits and claims filed against the University including, but not limited to, performing investigations, responding to discovery requests, preparing for and attending depositions and hearings, and filing motions. Reviews and researches federal and state laws and regulations, pending legislation, University policies and procedures to determine and evaluate the impact on the operations of the University. Performs other duties as required.
