FTCA Section torneys frequently handle large or complex cases of nional significance. They also provide guidance on complex legal issues in suits handled by United Stes Attorneys' Offices (USAOs) and for administrive claims pending with federal agencies, make recommendions on whether settlements proposed by federal agencies and USAOs should be authorized, and prepare appeal recommendions on adverse judgments in FTCA cases. Examples of law enforcement mters handled by the FTCA Section include cases involving alleged federal law enforcement misconduct, suits brought by individuals detained in immigrion custody, and cases arising from federal responses to protests and riots. The Section also defends the United Stes in complex litigion stemming from castrophic nural disasters. Further, the FTCA Section handles complex medical malpractice suits with medical causion issues in which high damages awards are sought. The Section provides guidance to USAOs and federal agencies on a variety of legal issues and advises on the development of stregy. The FTCA Section provides appeal recommendions on adverse FTCA judgments, including for cases handled by USAOs. The Section also reviews draft legislion th may have an impact on the public fisc. The Section is responsible for the adjustment and settlement of administrive claims arising out of the conduct of employees of the Department of Justice (DOJ), and for approving administrive settlements of claims arising out of the activities of all other federal agencies which are in excess of the settlement authority deleged to those agencies. Finally, the FTCA Section provides recommendions to the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division concerning requests for authority to consumme all settlements of tort claims th require the approval of the Assistant Attorney General or the Associe Attorney General.
