Full Job Description General Summary:
Each paralegal is assigned a specific caseload consisting of approximately 1800 active cases delineated alphabetically by the responsible relative's name. A child support attorney is also assigned that same caseload and supervises the paralegal's work. The paralegal is responsible for intake procedures and preparation for litigation for their assigned files. These procedures include preparing the file, scheduling the court date, preparing specific documents, e-filing documents, sending out notices / summons and correspondence, answering inquiries, and all data entry associated with their cases. Each paralegal is assigned one day per week where they are responsible for the preparation of all files that are up in court that day and then one day per week where they are responsible to prepare their own assigned files, including pulling the files, preparing appropriate orders for each file, and completing child support arrearage / delinquency calculations when necessary. The paralegals are responsible for re-filing their assigned files that were pulled for court after they have completed any necessary after court process and data entry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Receiving initial referrals by preparing file folder, scheduling court date, preparing summons and notices, and e-filing documents Data entry of contract requirements in
HFS/DCSS KIDS
system and SAO database including court dates, filing dates, service information, continuance dates, and DNA paternity testing information/results Prepare all files for assigned court date which consists of the pulling the files, preparing orders for each file, completing child support arrearage / delinquency calculations when necessary, creating data sheets, and scanning orders that entered to be sent to
HFS/DCSS
Entry of notes in KIDS system indicating results of court hearings from assigned caseload Send out employment verifications on relevant cases Assist Attorney's with exchange of discovery documents / financial affidavits Bring all new pleadings received to assigned attorney for review Answer general inquiries made by public on their assigned cases and refer issues to assigned attorney for a response when necessary Prepare after court documentation on their assigned cases including correspondence to parties and/or the initiating jurisdiction in UIFSA cases, notices, alias summons and scheduling of new court dates. Complete any after-court tasks required for the next court date such as obtaining records/information from the parties, HFS/DCSS or an initiating jurisdiction. Scheduling and noticing parties for DNA draws and entering information concerning DNA testing or results into the State database. Attend child support meetings and participate in required training offered by the SAO or by
HFS/DCSS.
Answer all phone calls and return all voice mail in a timely fashion. Possess general specific understanding of legal concepts involved in child support enforcement. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Required, paralegal certification and/or Associate's Degree Proficiency and ability to use computer systems including HFS's KIDS, Odyssey, Excel, and Word. Ability to work with large volume of cases and information accurately and efficiently. Ability to conduct an audit and calculate child support arrearages accurately Strong customer service skills. Ability to establish and maintain a satisfactory working relationship with HFS and SAO personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Sitting, talking, hearing and vision are required approximately 100% of the time. Filing, bending, reaching, and keying.
