Job Description
Medical Malpractice Litigation ParalegalPosition Overview Support a busy medical malpractice litigation practice by managing casework from intake through trial. Provide high-quality legal and technical assistance including medical records review and summarization, drafting pleadings and discovery, coordinating experts, e-filing, and trial preparation. Ensure compliance with HIPAA and facilitate lien resolution while maintaining accurate billing and case organization.
Key ResponsibilitiesConduct comprehensive medical records review and prepare detailed medical chronologies, timelines, and summaries.
Apply medical terminology, anatomy knowledge, and
Perform legal research to support pleadings, motions, and discovery strategies.
Draft and prepare pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and responses under attorney supervision.
Manage e-discovery workflows and document review projects using platforms such as Relativity and Concordance.
Prepare, organize, and manage trial exhibits and demonstratives; assist with deposition and trial logistics and setup.
Coordinate expert witnesses including retention, document exchange, fee tracking, and communication of deadlines.
Draft and serve subpoenas; handle subpoena compliance and third-party records retrieval.
Perform
Resolve Medicare/Medicaid and other lien issues in coordination with counsel and vendors.
Ensure HIPAA compliance in handling protected health information and maintain confidentiality of client files.
Use litigation support software and document management systems to index, tag, and maintain case documents.
Prepare settlement documentation, closing binders, and post-settlement lien resolution steps.
Assist with deposition preparation, witness preparation, and trial notebooks.
Track time, prepare billing entries, and support fee petitions and invoicing.
Communicate with clients, medical providers, insurers, and opposing counsel to obtain records and schedule events.
Coordinate electronic and physical evidence organization, redaction (Adobe Acrobat), and production.
Support insurance coverage analysis and maintain claim files, reservation of rights, and coverage-related documentation.
QualificationsAssociate degree, paralegal certificate, or equivalent; Bachelors degree preferred.3+ years of paralegal experience in medical malpractice litigation preferred; demonstrated experience with all phases of civil litigation.
Proficient in medical terminology, clinical documentation, anatomy, and familiarity with ICD-10 and CPT coding.
Experience with e-discovery and document review platforms (Relativity, Concordance) and litigation support software.
Proven experience with
Strong drafting skills for pleadings, motions, discovery, and settlement documentation.
Experience coordinating expert witnesses, drafting subpoenas, and handling deposition/trial preparation.
Working knowledge of HIPAA, privacy requirements, and best practices for handling PHI.Experience with Medicare/Medicaid lien resolution and post-settlement lien management.
Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat (including redaction), and document management systems.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and high-volume caseloads.
Strong communication skillsboth written and verbaland ability to interact professionally with clients, medical providers, and opposing counsel.
Accurate timekeeping and familiarity with billing practices for law firms.
Certification such as CLA, CP, or other paralegal credentials a plus.
Ability to travel occasionally for depositions and trial and to work extended hours as needed for trial preparation.
