Job Description
I am looking for a legal assistant or paralegal to join my growing solo Social Security disability practice. People are often in one of the most difficult periods of their lives when they seek out a disability attorney. They are dealing with serious health conditions, financial uncertainty, and a disability system that is often frustrating and overwhelming. Helping them navigate that process is challenging work, but it is also deeply rewarding - both in seeing the real-world impact of obtaining critical financial and medical resources and in allowing clients to feel fully heard, understood, and supported. The Social Security disability process requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to continually solve problems created by bureaucratic and administrative shenanigans. This position will play a key role in guiding clients through the administrative process, gathering records to support their claims, and keeping a small law practice running smoothly. The work is serious, but the office atmosphere is informal, collaborative, and supportive. The ideal candidate enjoys working with people, is comfortable on the phone and otherwise communicating with clients, government agencies, medical providers, schools, and employers, and enjoys proactively helping claims move forward rather than waiting for tasks to be assigned. Prior experience in Social Security disability law is preferred, but I am willing to train the right candidate. Experience in a law office, medical office, insurance setting, or similar administrative environment is a plus. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications, starting at $20/hour. Hours per week may increase as the practice grows. The schedule is flexible. Responsibilities Depending on experience and qualifications, responsibilities may include: Communicating with clients by phone, email, mail, and text Conducting client intake interviews Assisting with Social Security disability applications and forms Scheduling appointments and keeping close track of deadlines Requesting, tracking, and organizing medical, education, and employment records Reviewing and summarizing medical, education, and employment records Filing records using Electronic Records Express and CM/ECF Maintaining case files using Clio for case management Following up with Social Security offices, medical providers, and other agencies Preparing forms, correspondence, and other case-related documents Reviewing and proofreading legal briefs Maintaining confidentiality and properly handling sensitive personal identifying information General administrative support Qualifications Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills Strong written and verbal communication skills Professional, patient, and courteous telephone manner Ability to communicate with empathy and professionalism Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PDF editing, e-signatures, and other general office technology Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively Commitment to treating every client with dignity, respect, and compassion without judgment Please submit a resume and a short statement regarding your interest in disability work.
