Full Job Description NYSUT Legal Assistant Overview:
This position provides administrative support to attorneys and/or managers in the NYSUT Office of General Counsel.
Primary Responsibilities:
Uses and understands legal terminology and State & Federal judicial and administrative rules of procedure including filing requirements for legal documents Familiar with standard legal concepts, practices and procedures Familiar with State and Federal court electronic filing systems Responsible for maintenance of legal files, calendars and electronic case database Works under immediate supervision using pre-established office guidelines and timelines to perform the functions of the position Collaborates and communicates directly with attorneys on projects and cases Document preparation and editing, including letters, memoranda, and papers, such as pleadings, affidavits, memorandum of law/briefs, summonses, notices, subpoenas and the like Ability to effectively communicate with members and clients via telephone; takes and forwards messages, makes telephone calls, reviews mail, updates calendars, enters time and expenses, updates case-related data, and completes attorneys' expense vouchers Manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects Open and review incoming mail, scan, docket and distribute same Maintains confidentiality of client information Organize and prepare inactive files to be closed Provide coverage when other secretaries are on vacation or in need Notary Public Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent and either an advanced degree or a minimum 2-5 years legal administrative experience Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Lawbase (or other case management system) NYSUT- Who are we?
