Introduction :
LAW is seeking applications for a paralegal in its Milwaukee office. The paralegal will support the Volunteer Lawyers Project, which coordinates and supports Legal Action's statewide pro bono work. Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc. ("Legal Action") is a non-profit law firm, funded by the federal Legal Services Corporation, the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, and many other sources and supporters. Legal Action provides free civil legal aid to low-income persons in Wisconsin with offices in Milwaukee, Madsion, Racine, Oshkosh, Green Bay, La Crosse, and Wausau. Legal Action attorneys and paralegals have expertise in a range of substantive areas, but most of our direct representation is in the areas of housing, public benefits, removing barriers to employment, consumer law, and family law.

Office Location:
This position will be based in Legal Action's Milwaukee office and requires in-person attendance at the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
Governance:
This position is represented for purposes of collective bargaining by
DISTRICT COUNCIL
32, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, and its affiliated
LOCAL 1954
("the Union"), and the collective bargaining agreement between Legal Action and the Union, in addition to Legal Action's personnel policies, governs this position. New employees may voluntarily join the Union.
Position Description:
The Volunteer Lawyers Project coordinates Legal Action's work performed by private attorneys, law students, and other legal professionals. The VLP is responsible for recruiting, training, and supporting lawyers who provide pro bono legal services. Working under the supervision of the VLP Director and Staff Attorneys, the paralegal will support the work of VLP projects including the Eviction Defense Project, Consumer Debt Defense Project, Student Legal Aid Project, Bankruptcy Clinics, and others. Attorneys and Paralegal are responsible for tracking cases, following up with clients, recruiting volunteers, and general management of the program. Paralegal position is integral to the success and longevity of the VLP.
Key Responsibilities:
Pro bono clinic management and case referral, including regular staffing at clinics at the Milwaukee County courthouse, scheduling clients and volunteers, and managing the necessary platforms for virtual client meetings, screen sharing, and other functions. Client interviews and communication, including client intake, case development, written correspondence, and appropriate referrals for services. Organization and File Maintenance, including maintaining client paper records and electronic records, including case record and document collection, and organization in the client database. Volunteer Support and Recruitment. Litigation Investigation and Support. Some examples include legal research, document gathering, interviewing witnesses, and public record searches. Data Reporting. Collect and tabulate project data and other internal LAW data while maintaining client confidentiality. Other Duties as Assigned. Occasional travel and work evenings and weekends as needed.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or prior experience in the legal or social service field. Excellent technology skills, with proficiency in Zoom, Microsoft Suite, Adobe, Google Apps, texting applications, and phone data preservation. Clear and concise oral and written communication skills. Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Ability to work effectively in a highly interactive and in-person work environment, engaging with a diverse range of people. Cultural competence and respect for differences in race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances. Willingness to receive direction and implement feedback. Ability to attend the Consumer Debt Defense Clinic in person at the Milwaukee County Courthouse on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Preferred Qualifications:
College degree or Paralegal certificate from an accredited college, university, or Paralegal educational program. Experience and knowledge of the court systems and community partners in Legal Action's overall service area. Ability to communicate with persons in the client community who speak a language other than English as their principal language (e.g., Spanish or Hmong.) Cultural affinity with the client community.
Salary/Compensation:
Legal Action's salaries are not negotiable: Our salary scales are based solely on years of experience with each step on the scale equivalent to one full year of experience. It currently includes:
employer-paid health and dental insurance for employee, spouse, and family with a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA), employer-paid life and long-term disability insurance; employee-paid income protection benefits; a profit-sharing plan; generous sick leave accrual; and at least four weeks of vacation leave and four personal holidays per year. (Legal Action policies require employees with a spouse to contribute $200/month to the health insurance premium if the spouse has other health insurance available to them.)
Spanish or Hmong Language Frequency Premium:
Legal Action's Salary Administration Plan includes additional pay of either $2,400 annually or $4,800 annually to those employees who are fluent in Spanish or Hmong.

Legal Action supports flexible work arrangements that meet the goals of the organization and the employee. All employees are eligible to request flexible work, including flextime, compressed work week, and remote work.
Supervision:
This position will report to Maggie Niebler-Brown, Director of the Volunteer Lawyers Project.
Probationary Period:
