We are seeking a legal assistant with five (5) or more years of experience assisting civil litigation matters. The legal assistant will assist attorneys handling our maritime and civil defense litigation dockets. The maritime docket also includes some commercial transactional matters that will require assistance drafting/editing contracts and other legal documents. Qualified candidates must be self-starters with excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills. Candidates must be detailed-oriented and organized, and willing to work independently as well as together within a group. The right candidate will provide legal assistance to attorneys in the daily operation of practicing law by providing quality work product for clients. Responsibilities Assist attorneys with maritime and civil litigation cases by organizing and managing case files. Handling filings and service documents (both outgoing and incoming), calendaring, and maintaining case information/materials within our online system (iManage). Assistance with drafting/editing/proofreading of pleadings and discovery, ensuring accuracy/compliance with court procedures and utilization of appropriate formatting, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Responsible for scheduling depositions, preparing related notices, and communicating with court reporting services, videographers, and interpreters. Working with our lawyers and accounting department to assist with the handling of vendor invoices, expense reports, client billing, and attorney time entries (Aderant timekeeper software). Support litigation efforts by preparing trial/hearing and written discovery/document production materials. Utilize legal research tools/online databases such as Westlaw, Texas Secretary of State, PACER/ECF, and local Texas state court e-filing systems/online dockets to support case handling. Maintaining/updating online calendars (e.g., hearings, depositions, mediations, trials, meetings, deadlines, etc.) for assigned attorneys. Communications with clients regarding scheduling, billing, and other administrative matters. Transcription of documents/correspondence from audio-recorded dictation. Submitting conflicts checks and assisting with opening of new files. Required Skills Ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing. Ability to type 50+ wpm; skilled typing ability and knowledge of personal computers, software, and related applications. Proficiency in Microsoft Word (including use of redline/track change editing) and Outlook, as well as Adobe.
Basic math skills:
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Strong attention to detail. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to use diplomacy and discretion in relaying information. Accurate transcription of audio-recorded dictation. Can organize, prioritize, plan and multi-task work activities, with the ability to effectively meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of civil litigation legal assistant experience in a law firm or professional office environment required. Maritime law experience preferred but not required. Job Type:
