Full Job Description Job Description:
We are a small, client-focused criminal defense law firm led by a single attorney who is passionate about helping people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. We take our work seriously, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. Our office culture is professional, respectful, and team-oriented, while remaining relaxed and flexible. We believe great employees have lives, interests, families, businesses, and goals outside the office. We're looking for someone who wants to contribute meaningfully to our clients and our team, while maintaining a healthy balance with their own personal pursuits. If you're highly organized, dependable, and enjoy being the person who keeps everything running smoothly, we'd love to meet you.
Position Overview:
The Legal Assistant serves as the organizational backbone of the firm. You'll help manage client communications, organize discovery, maintain case files, track deadlines, and assist the attorney in staying focused on the highest-priority tasks. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys creating order, solving problems, and helping a busy professional stay productive. While legal experience is helpful, we're ultimately looking for the right person—someone who is reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to providing excellent client service.
What You'll Do:
Client Communication:
- Answer phones and respond to client inquiries professionally and compassionately.
- Schedule consultations, meetings, and appointments.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients throughout their cases.
- Maintain clear and accurate client records and communications.
Discovery & File Management:
Download discovery from various prosecutors' online portals and systems. Organize, label, and maintain digital case files. Track incoming discovery and ensure materials are ready for attorney review. Keep case files current, organized, and easily accessible.
Attorney Support:
Manage calendars, deadlines, and task lists. Help prioritize workflow and ensure important items don't fall through the cracks. Prepare files and materials for court appearances, hearings, and client meetings. Follow up on outstanding tasks and help keep the attorney accountable and on schedule.
Office Administration:
Process incoming mail, email, and court notices. Maintain office systems and procedures. Coordinate communications with courts, prosecutors, and other agencies. Assist with general administrative and organizational needs of the practice.
What We're Looking For:
Exceptional organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Attention to detail and follow-through. Someone who is a good fit for our small-office environment. Professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment. Proficiency with basic office technology and software.
Why You'll Like Working Here:
Professional but relaxed office environment. Direct access to decision-making and meaningful responsibility. Flexibility when life happens. We value results, reliability, and communication more than rigid office politics. We understand that good employees often have families, side projects, businesses, educational goals, or other commitments outside of work. Opportunity to grow with the firm and have a real impact on its success. Help with tuition if you'd like to further educate yourself within the criminal justice system.
Schedule & Compensation:
This is an in-office position, but we'd like there to one day be an option for hybrid work. We are willing to work with the right candidate to create a schedule that supports both the firm's needs and the employee's personal and professional goals. Compensation will depend on experience, skills, and overall fit.
A Final Note:
We're not necessarily looking for the person with the longest legal résumé. We're looking for the person who is dependable, organized, kind to clients, and capable of helping a busy criminal defense practice run smoothly. If that sounds like you, we'd encourage you to apply.
