Open Until Filled Employment Opportunity Are you a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment? The City of Orem Legal Services Department is seeking a Legal Assistant to provide vital clerical, administrative, and legal support. Working under the direction and supervision of City Prosecutors, you will play a central role in ensuring the efficient, accurate, and successful prosecution of criminal misdemeanor cases within the City's jurisdiction. Day-to-Day Responsibilities As a Legal Assistant, your daily routine will change rapidly, requiring you to manage numerous tasks simultaneously despite frequent interruptions.
Core duties include:
Legal Document Preparation:
Draft and prepare precise legal documents related to misdemeanor prosecution, including informations, summons, subpoenas, warrants, writs, restitution letters, transportation orders, and various motions (e.g., motions to continue, dismiss, or show cause).
Evidence & Discovery Coordination:
Partner closely with police departments and government agencies to assemble evidence (police reports, witness statements, body/dashcam videos, toxicology reports, etc.). Manage, prepare, and file discovery requests, replies, and motions in strict compliance with legal timelines.
Case Management & Data Integrity:
Review court prosecution calendars to ensure all cases are updated and ready for court. Enter new cases into case management software, verify correct charging language against the Utah State Code, and track post-court notes and tasks.
Bail & Expungement Processing:
Prepare and file documents regarding bail forfeitures, judgments, and expungements by collaborating with defense counsel, court personnel, and state officials.
Administrative Support:
Manage incoming correspondence, maintain physical and digital filing systems, operate office equipment, and compile data for reports. You will be checking legal language, tracking deadlines, and managing critical evidence where mistakes have real-world consequences. Accuracy in your work product is paramount.

This is a high-volume, fast-paced environment. You must be able to maintain your composure, meet strict deadlines, and stay focused amidst frequent interruptions.
Exceptional De-escalation & People Skills:
You will frequently interact with individuals in stressful, tense, or emotional situations—including victims, witnesses, and defendants. The ability to communicate with empathy, professionalism, and authority to de-escalate difficult conversations is essential.
Proactive Problem-Solving:
You should be comfortable using discretion within department guidelines to independently find solutions to unexpected issues, even when there is no established precedent.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of secretarial/administrative experience OR equivalent training.
  • Knowledge of state and City criminal codes, laws, and ordinances (or the ability to quickly adapt to changes in them).
  • Knowledge of court processes and procedures related to misdemeanor prosecution.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, computer systems, and standard English usage (grammar, spelling, and punctuation).
  • Ability to type/word process at a speed necessary for successful performance.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Utah Driver&s License, with a commitment to safe vehicle operation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working within a legal setting or judicial environment.
Pay and Benefits Individual starting salary will depend on qualifications, certifications, and experience. The City also provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Schedule 9-80 Schedule (7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. M-Th, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every other Friday).
