Job Description
The purpose of this classification is to supervise the day-to-day operations and staff involved in providing supervision and counseling to offenders on court probation. This position requires working a flexible schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and a rotating on-call schedule that requires phone accessibility. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and management; and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures. Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work: prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate. Assists in developing and implementing probation policies and procedures: coordinates probation and supporting services and programs as necessary; reviews dispositions, complaints, custody reports, and social summaries and requests modifications; prepares reports on probation activities, services, and related information; and monitors staff to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures and with all applicable state and local laws. Reviews case files for completeness and accuracy: reviews cases daily for errors and omissions; ensures the required quality levels; and maintains records relating to cases assigned to probation officers. Ensures efficient and effective day-to-day operations: advises staff on difficult or sensitive cases; coordinates and authorizes the release of defendants; coordinates with appropriate law enforcement agencies to execute the arrest of probation violators; monitors and maintains office supply levels; and ensures proper operation of office equipment, securing repairs and maintenance as necessary. Provides probationary supervision for a caseload of offenders; reviews court records and court orders: determines obligations of offenders; conducts intake interviews; collects and records case intake data; explains conditions of probation and related programs and the consequences of probation violation; performs drug screening; maintains regular communication with probationers and closes cases or discharges defendant from supervision per case time limit.
Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Sensory Requirements Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers. Formulates case plans for offenders:
establishes goals and sanctions; secures court ordered or sanctioned services with partnering agencies; monitors compliance with completion of court ordered conditions.Performs court officer/reporter duties:
schedules, prepares, and presents cases within mandated time limits; provides notification of upcoming hearings; identifies witnesses, victims, and other relevant individuals needed to appear in court; prepares and executes subpoenas and other legal documents; provides testimony in court; conducts case related research; and makes recommendations for the dispensation of cases. Identifies community resources designed to meet the needs of probationers. Attends a variety of meetings, such as intake meetings, probation meetings, supervisor meetings, and management meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned.
