04/2026 Job Summary The Probation Officer supports the Menominee County District Court by supervising individuals placed on probation and promoting compliance with court-ordered conditions to enhance public safety and reduce recidivism. This position provides case management services that include conducting interviews and regular check-ins, monitoring progress in treatment and community-based programs, administering drug and alcohol testing, and coordinating rehabilitative services such as counseling and community service. The Probation Officer conducts presentence investigations and prepares comprehensive reports to assist the District Court Judge in determining appropriate sentencing, while maintaining accurate and timely case records. Additional responsibilities include preparing legal documents and reports, managing restitution and payment arrangements, monitoring individuals on electronic tether, and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, policies, and procedures. This role also involves active participation in specialty court programs, including drug and sobriety court, as well as attending court proceedings, testifying when required, and collaborating with law enforcement, treatment providers, and other agencies. Work is performed under the direction of the District Court Judge, with a focus on accountability, rehabilitation, and the effective administration of justice. Essential Functions and Responsibilities The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Supervises and counsels probationers; conducts interviews and check-ins; conducts drug and alcohol testing; monitors progress in counseling and other services, all in order to achieve successful completion of court ordered terms of probation. Maintains an accurate and timely historical record of all information related to probation cases under supervision. Activates tethers and monitors probationers on tether when required. Alternatively, works with Menominee County Jail staff to complete these functions. Conducts presentence investigations and prepares informational reports to assist the District Court Judge in determining appropriate sentencing. Keeps Judge informed of probationers' status. Coordinates substance abuse evaluations and community service; assists probationers in finding counseling. May be required to conduct substance abuse evaluations and to obtain the required State certification to perform that function. Prepares restitution determinations and facilitates payment arrangements. Prepares orders of probation and orders of discharge; issues probation violations and wage withholding orders; processes and issues crime victims impact statements; and prepares reports required by the State of Michigan. Attends Court proceedings and meetings as determined by the District Court Judge. Performs a leading role in the District Court drug and sobriety court including case management, data compilation, and drug/alcohol testing supervision. Case manager for the regional mental health court, as well as assisting in the establishment of that specialty court. Testifies in court when necessary. Prepares and coordinates all information relative to specific cases to provide factual information in a timely manner for the Court when called upon to testify. Adheres to all District Court and applicable County policies and procedures. Performs other related functions as assigned or required by the District Court Judge.Minimum Education & Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree in humans services, counseling, social work, criminal justice or a related field.Experience:
More than one (1) year of work-related experience. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Minimum Knowledge Knowledge of probation practices, principles, and case management techniques. Knowledge of the criminal justice system, including court procedures, sentencing practices, and legal terminology. Knowledge of the Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL), applicable court rules, and State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) policies and guidelines. Knowledge of substance abuse, addiction, and behavioral health issues, including treatment methods and community resources. Knowledge of risk assessment principles and evidence-based supervision practices. Knowledge of electronic monitoring systems (e.g., tether) and related procedures. Knowledge of report writing standards, including presentence investigation reports and court documentation. Minimum Skills Strong interviewing and counseling skills, including the ability to assess behavior, gather information, and support behavior change. Effective written communication skills to prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive reports, court documents, and case notes. Verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with probationers, judges, attorneys, law enforcement, and service providers. Organizational and time management skills to manage a caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills to manage difficult or sensitive situations. Data entry and recordkeeping skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate information, assess risk, and make sound recommendations. Minimum Abilities Ability to supervise and monitor probationers effectively while enforcing compliance with court-ordered conditions. Ability to interpret and apply laws, court orders, policies, and procedures. Ability to maintain accurate, detailed, and timely case records. Ability to exercise sound judgment and make independent decisions within established guidelines. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations, including individuals in crisis or under stress. Ability to coordinate services and collaborate with community agencies, treatment providers, and criminal justice partners. Ability to testify in court and present factual, objective information clearly and professionally. Ability to adapt to changing priorities, legal requirements, and program needs. Ability to perform duties in both office and field settings, including conducting drug/alcohol testing and monitoring compliance.EOE / ADA
