• Why does the job exist? The purpose of the Juvenile Probation Officer (JPO) Supervisor is to supervise JPO staff and to participate in caseload management of clients to ensure compliance with court orders. Probation and Parole Officers are responsible for the supervision and performance monitoring of convicted misdemeanor and felony offenders in the community on behalf of the Courts and the Parole Board. These positions perform a variety of routine duties that range from law enforcement responses, community resource management and referral, courtroom testimony, reporting writing and investigation as well as advocating for offender services, employment and housing. JPOs also serve and support offenders and families in a responsive community-based system of care that is client-centered, family-focused, and culturally competent. Offender supervision duties include utilization of intermediate and graduated sanctions to include arrest authority for the purpose of reducing criminal activity and enhancing public safety. How does it get done? The key responsibilities of a JPO Supervisor are to provide direct supervision and development of JPO's and administrative staff. Oversee management of all client cases, respond to staff and client needs in a timely manner, and develop and collaborate with community partners to provide programming to clients and their families. Who are the customers? This job is to support probation officers while holding them accountable to policies and procedures. Ideal Candidate This job is to support probation officers while holding them accountable to policies and procedures. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, corrections, guidance and counseling, social work, police science, criminal justice, juvenile justice, education, public administration, or closely related field and two (2) years of experience related to the purpose of the position. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting, client's homes, and institutions with potential risk from offenders who are possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or otherwise distressed. Late hours, weekend and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Some travel may be required. The following conditions are also applicable: Incumbents must have a telephone and must be willing to give this phone number to the Director of Field Services. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times. Incumbents must be willing to be frequently on-call 24 hours a day. Work is in an office setting, client's homes and institutions. Incumbents must be willing to travel, and be willing to work shifts, holidays, weekends and call back for emergencies. Incumbents must be willing to work with offenders that have high-risk behaviors and require intervention or services. Incumbents must be willing to work with potential risk from offenders who are possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol or otherwise distressed.
