Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Probation Officer ensures that adult and juveniles are complying with court orders in both pre-trial and post-adjudication settings to access vital services, remain drug and alcohol free, and abide by all other terms and conditions as ordered by the court. The Probation Officer provides recommendations on disposition of case at sentencing or review hearings. The Probation Officer will serve as a member of the Path to Wellness Court Team including monitoring the participants' activities and reporting to the Path to Wellness Court Team during weekly participants' progress reviews providing information regarding the participants' progress.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRMENTS
Experience in related field with the courts or law enforcement; Degree (B.A., B.S., or A.A.) in Criminal Justice preferred or at least three to five years' experience in criminal justice, social work, or other relevant field of study. Highly developed attention to detail and organizational skills. Knowledge of substance abuse or desire to learn. Demonstrated good verbal and writing skills. Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Male Experience working with Native Americans in tribal court setting. Drug and alcohol testing experience. Grant reporting experience. Strong clerical and computer/database skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
Uses special training and skills to provide services to clients involved with the Pueblo of Pojoaque Tribal Court. Tracks compliance of persons under court supervision or court order. Performs criminogenic assessments of persons who may be eligible for the Path to Wellness Court. In consultation with the court, behavioral health, or social services, refers individuals to substance abuse programs, counseling or other social and mental health resources. Regularly reports on client progress and violations through appropriate motion filing to the court. Maintains up to date, accurate, and complete record for each client. Enters all client activity in Court data base. Makes recommendations to the Path to Wellness Team for sanctions and incentives. Uses special skills and techniques that may be necessary in the performance of his/her duties. Carefully documents facts and testifies in court with respect to the participant's activities, behavior and quality of adjustment while under supervision, following established legal procedures. Conduct investigations as directed by the court, prepare appropriate reports, and is prepared to make recommendations based on these investigations . Works closely with other Path to Wellness Court team members to coordinate treatment services for the participants. Clients will be assisted in accessing treatment services as may be needed. Assess the effectiveness each client's requirements. For Path to Wellness participants, the Compliance Officer will be a member ofthe team thatreviews the weekly progress of the client and make recommendations for services or consequences if the participant has not been compliant. Performs all assigned duties relating to cases scheduled for appearance in court. Assists as needed in courtroom procedure during court sessions. Participate in all hearings and weekly participant case reviews. Prepares and submits performance reports on the status of all clients. Gathers and evaluates data pertinent to individual cases in connection with both investigation and supervision for all clients. Conduct counseling interviews with assigned cases according to approved counseling techniques in order to determine and clarify potential issues and services needed. Suggests constructive methods for addressing issues; and consults with supervisor, substance abuse counselor, case managers as necessary. Following a complete evaluation refers clients to community agencies that offer specialized services required for a particular individual's needs. Contacts collateral sources for information to evaluate or verify current information on client's adjustments. Conducts home visits with participants.
Administer drug and alcohol tests:
BAC (Alcohol Breathalyzer testing); urine tests/mouth swabs. Complete certifications for access to toxicology labs. Complete certifications in federal background checks. Appear in court in other jurisdictions as required for participants. Maintain good communication with other jurisdictions and seek permission to travel onto tribal lands to perform home visits. Other duties as directed.
JOB FUNCTION
Independently use time efficiently to prioritize and perform multiple tasks to meet multiple concurrent deadlines and manage large volumes of work. Work effectively under pressure and cope with multiple interruptions to meet deadlines. Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with Tribal Court, Social Services, other departments, other jurisdictions, clients, peers, and the general public. Comply with office and personnel procedures. May require some evening and weekend hours. Participate in applicable trainings.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Manual dexterity to operate computers and other necessary office equipment. Able to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment. Able to bend, reach, kneel, twist and grip items in assigned work area.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Candidates must submit to a drug test prior to employment and random testing thereafter. Work is generally performed within an office environment with standard office equipment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing and walking for up to 30% of the time. The working environment is generally favorable. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work may include high stressful situations at times.
