Job Description

Position Summary The Juvenile Probation Officer provides community-based supervision, intervention, and case management services to youth involved in the juvenile justice system. This position promotes public safety, ensures compliance with court orders, and supports positive youth development through evidence-based and trauma-informed practices. The Probation Officer works collaboratively with youth, families, schools, and service providers. Duties may require flexible scheduling, including evenings and weekends. This position may also perform limited Deputy Bailiff functions.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or related field required Experience working with at-risk or justice-involved youth preferred
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of juvenile court processes preferred Ability to apply evidence-based and trauma-informed practices Strong communication and organizational skills Ability to interpret legal and procedural requirements Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision and Support Duties:
Supervise youth on probation or diversion Conduct assessments using OYAS and develop case plans Maintain accurate and timely documentation (24-48 hours) Monitor compliance and initiate violations as needed
Field and Community Work:
Conduct home, school, and community visits Collaborate with families and service providers Refer youth to community-based services
Court Responsibilities:
Prepare reports and recommendations Appear in court and provide updates Collaborate with legal and judicial partners
Intervention and Support:
Utilize evidence-based strategies to address behavior Support skill development and accountability Monitor treatment participation
Compliance and Data:
Maintain accurate records in required systems Ensure compliance with court policies and guidelines Assist with audits and data collection
Additional Duties:
Conduct drug and alcohol screening Serve as a mandated reporter Participate in training and meetings Perform other duties as assigned
Deputy Bailiff Responsibilities:
Maintain courtroom order and decorum Assist with courtroom setup and equipment Support judicial officers during hearings Assist in de-escalation when necessary Work Schedule and Conditions May include evenings, weekends, and on-call responsibilities Frequent travel within the community Work Environment Exposure to community settings and environmental conditions Potential interaction in high-stress situations General and Physical Requirements Valid Ohio driver's license required Successful completion of background check and drug screen Ability to lift up to 20 pounds Ability to sit, stand, or drive for extended periods Critical Competencies Communication and interpersonal skills Critical thinking and decision-making Organization and time management Professional judgment and ethics Ottawa County is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Drug Free Workplace.
