SUMMARY:
This is a professional level position assigned to the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Criminal Division, Adult Probation Department. The probation officer is responsible for carrying out the mandates of the Pennsylvania crimes code and related regulations. The responsibilities of this position may include providing supervision of locally sentenced individuals, enforcing rules and conditions of probation, resolving probation violations, providing rehabilitation services, preparing reports, and presenting probation matters to court. Assignments generally follow routine procedures, although a supervisor may give specific assignments.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree with major course work preferably in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work or related field and two years of relevant work experience. While work experience does not replace the education requirement, previous work experience will be reviewed and considered in the interview process. Knowledge of social services, drug and alcohol counseling, and mental health counseling techniques. Knowledge of probation and parole work. Knowledge of the appropriate laws and rules of procedure, the ability to gather and research information, and prepare formal reports for the court. Effective written and verbal communication, ability to problem solve, work independently, conduct interviews in a professional manner, and the ability to handle sensitive materials with discretion. The ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with court and government officials, other agencies, offenders, and the public. Act 33/34 Clearance, FBI Criminal Record Clearance, and Pennsylvania Driver's License/Insurance required. Knowledge of general computer equipment, ability to learn court system programs, and word/excel competency.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate office activities and field visits in connection with case investigation and supervision functions. Develop probation plans for offender supervision and make referrals as appropriate. Engage with supervised individuals to develop goals, navigate court ordered stipulations and enhance success with supervision requirements. Monitor offender activity regularly to verify compliance with supervising guidelines. Enforce court orders. Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records in the prescribed format. Prepare and submit violation reports to the court. Attend court hearings as required. Respond to appropriate inquiries from court personnel, attorneys and others concerning procedures, schedules, and specific cases
