Director of Safety & Compliance The Safety Manager leads the company's Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) programs with a primary focus on compliance, prevention, training, and cultivating a strong safety culture across all operating environments. This role develops policies, conducts audits, leads training, and drives corrective and preventive actions. As a secondary function, the Safety Manager supports environmental reporting (ADEC/EPA/USCG/DOT) and assists with insurance-related claims coordination. The position requires significant on-site presence and travel to terminals, marine operations, transportation, warehouse, shop, and office locations.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Safety Program Leadership (Primary Responsibility)- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of company-wide safety programs.
- Develop and revise safety policies, procedures, and training manuals.
- Promote a proactive safety culture that encourages accountability and risk awareness.
- Provide guidance to supervisors and employees on safe practices.
- Organize and lead monthly Manager Safety Meetings, including preparation of meeting materials, presenting safety topics, tracking participation, and documenting attendance and action items. 2. Compliance, Audits & Risk Assessment
- Conduct regular onsite inspections and full-scale annual audits of all terminals/facilities.
- Identify unsafe conditions, practices, and compliance gaps; develop corrective action plans.
- Maintain accurate and audit-ready documentation.
- Provide written reports and recommendations to the Director of Safety & Compliance and General Manager. 3. Training & Competency Development
- Deliver new-hire and recurring OHS training, including site-specific and high-risk task training.
- Maintain training records, completion tracking, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate and deliver Smith System driver safety training for required personnel.
- Support managers by providing materials for toolbox meetings, tailgate talks, and facility trainings. 4. Incident Response & Investigation
- Respond to emergencies and support incident command as needed.
- Lead investigations for injuries, near misses, spills, property damage, and unsafe acts.
- Coordinate workers' compensation cases with HR.
- Recommend and verify corrective actions; track incident trends. 5. Environmental Compliance Support (Secondary Responsibility)
- Assist with ADEC terminal and tank farm correspondence, amendments, and plan updates.
- Support
ADEC/EPA
air and water quality reporting accuracy and on-time submission.- Assist with USCG Security Plans and FRP/Facility Plans, including compliance checks.
- Support DOT driver qualification and credentialing processes with HR. 6. Insurance & Risk Coordination (Secondary Responsibility)
- Assess notifications of injuries, spills, and property damage.
- Assist with gathering documentation, photos, and information required for insurance claims.
- Coordinate with insurance adjusters, brokers, and managers as requested.
- Maintain organized incident and claims files. 7. Operational Support
- Provide hands-on oversight and support across terminals, marine operations, trucking, yard, warehouse, shop, marinas, and office teams.
- Support leadership and staff with guidance, problem-solving, and safety expertise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
- Plans, implements, and conducts preventative care, safety, and compliance training programs.
- Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
- Plans, implements, manages, and maintains comprehensive environmental safety & health programs on premises or at project site locations.
- Provides management team with guidance on health and safety and confirms project site fulfills industry, local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.
- Collaborates with management to develop an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for project site injury and incident notification, investigation, and case management. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
- Guarantees that all work is performed in accordance with approved manuals, internal policies and procedures, contract documents, and good engineering practices.
- Provides technical support to terminal managers.
- Participates in team meetings and provides regular on-site project presence.

ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Credentials Bachelor's degree preferred (Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or related field). Valid Alaska Driver's License. 40-hourHAZWOPER
(or ability to obtain within 6 months). Experience 5-7+ years of professional safety experience in petroleum terminals, marine operations, transportation, industrial operations, or related fields. Strong knowledge ofOSHA, ADEC, EPA, DOT, USCG
regulations. Experience leading training, conducting audits, writing policies, and performing investigations. Technical Skills Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Familiarity with learning management systems. Strong documentation, reporting, and analytical ability. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong leadership, influence, and coaching skills. Excellent communication (verbal, written, and presentation). Highly organized with strong prioritization and follow-through. Ability to manage multiple projects and travel 40-50%. Effective critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Ability to respond to emergencies and after-hours callouts. Physical Demands Routinely lift/carry up to 50 lbs; occasionally up to 75 lbs. Ability to push/pull up to 350 lbs with a pallet jack. Operate forklifts and hand trucks (as trained). Work in industrial and marine environments with required PPE. Frequent walking, standing, reaching, and climbing. Work Environment Regular exposure to industrial, terminal, and marine environments with hazardous materials and petroleum byproducts.PPE required:
protective footwear, safety glasses, hearing protection, and others as tasks require. Office duties are performed in typical indoor conditions.
