Lompoc, CA (100% On-Site)

Imerys is seeking a dynamic, hands-on Health and Safety Manager to lead H&S programs at our Lompoc operation. Reporting directly to the EHS Director for the USA & Canada, you will be the driving force behind regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and continuous safety performance improvement. Managing a dedicated team of two H&S professionals (a Specialist and a Technician), you will spend roughly 80% of your time directly on-site in our industrial minerals processing plant and mining environment, establishing a vital visible leadership presence. Key Responsibilities Field Presence & Engagement:
Spend 80% of your time in the plant/mine environment. Work closely with operations, maintenance, and frontline teams to identify hazards, improve work practices, and reinforce safety expectations.
Regulatory Compliance:
Oversee, prepare, and submit all safety and environmental reports and permits in accordance with MSHA, OSHA, and California H&S laws.
Workforce Engagement & Influence:
Partner collaboratively with operations and maintenance teams, using strong field leadership to influence without authority and engage the hourly workforce in proactive safety initiatives.
Training & Development:
Oversee and coordinate mandated safety training (OSHA, MSHA Part 48, state, and local), ensuring site managers, supervisors, and coordinators are continuously up-to-date.
Incident Investigation & Audits:
Facilitate post-incident reviews, support root-cause analysis, lead site audits, and meticulously track the implementation of corrective actions.
Agency & Stakeholder Relations:
Manage and maintain excellent working relationships with local, county, state, and federal regulatory bodies. Oversee contractor safety management and the workers' compensation process.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education:
Bachelor's degree is required (a technical discipline such as Environmental, Health, Safety, or a related field is preferred).
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of dedicated Safety and Health experience within heavy industrial environments (e.g., mining, heavy construction, oil/gas, automotive, concrete, aerospace, or industrial manufacturing).
Supervisory Leadership:
At least 3 years of direct supervisory or team management experience.
Core Technical Competency:
Deep regulatory exposure to OSHA and DOT frameworks.
Proven Soft Skills:
Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and a proven track record of successfully engaging an hourly, frontline workforce.
Physical & Environmental Demands:
This role requires working 80% of the time in an active industrial plant/mine setting. Activities include climbing stairs/ladders, hiking site terrain, and working near heavy mining equipment, confined spaces, and hot processing machinery. Up to 10% travel required to other Imerys locations and professional conferences.
Pay:
$130,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
