Key Responsibilities Develop, implement, and maintain company-wide safety policies and procedures for fleet operations. Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial/state, and local transportation safety regulations (e.g., DOT, FMCSA, MTO, CVOR as applicable). Monitor driver safety performance, including hours of service, speeding, harsh driving, and violations through telematics systems. Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses; determine root causes and implement corrective actions. Manage safety audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews; maintain all required documentation and records. Oversee driver qualification files, ensuring proper licensing, certifications, and medical compliance. Develop and conduct driver safety training, onboarding, and ongoing refresher programs. Monitor fleet safety metrics (collision rate, CSA scores, insurance claims, etc.) and prepare regular reports for management. Coordinate drug & alcohol testing programs in compliance with regulations. Manage workplace health and safety programs, including hazard assessments and risk mitigation. Liaise with enforcement agencies, insurance providers, and regulatory bodies. Lead emergency response planning and crisis management for incidents involving company vehicles. Ensure proper maintenance and safety standards for all vehicles in coordination with maintenance teams. Promote a strong safety culture across the organization. Leadership & Management Supervise safety staff, driver trainers, and compliance coordinators. Provide coaching and discipline related to safety violations. Collaborate with operations, dispatch, HR, and maintenance departments. Set safety goals, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives. Required Qualifications Minimum 5-7 years of safety experience in the transportation/trucking industry. Strong knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements. Experience managing large fleets (200+ vehicles preferred). Professional certifications (e.g., CDS, CDT or equivalent) are an asset. Skills & Competencies Strong analytical and incident investigation skills. Excellent communication and training ability. Proficiency in safety management systems and fleet telematics software. Leadership and team management capabilities. Ability to handle high-pressure situations and make critical decisions. Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Reduction in accident/incident rates. Improvement in compliance scores (e.g., CVOR/CSA ratings). Reduction in insurance claims and costs. Driver safety performance and training completion rates. Audit results and regulatory compliance levels.
