Job Description
Safety DirectorPosition Overview The Safety Director will lead and manage the companys construction safety program across mid-rise, high-rise and multi-family projects. This role is responsible for developing and implementing safety policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing incidents, and partnering with project teams and subcontractors to maintain a safe work environment while supporting project schedule and budget objectives.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop, implement and continuously improve company-wide safety programs, policies and procedures tailored to mid-rise, high-rise and multi-family construction projects.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, local building codes and other applicable regulatory requirements; stay current with evolving safety regulations and best practices.
Conduct regular site safety inspections and risk assessments; identify hazards and ensure corrective action plans are implemented and tracked to closure.
Lead incident/near-miss investigations, root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action implementation; prepare and present investigation reports to leadership.
Provide leadership, mentoring and oversight to site Safety Managers and Safety Coordinators; set performance expectations and coach for improvement.
Design and deliver effective safety training programs (new hire, toolbox talks, fall protection, scaffold, confined space, emergency response, etc.) for employees and subcontractors; maintain training records.
Manage subcontractor prequalification and safety performance reviews; ensure subcontractors comply with company safety standards and contractual requirements.
Develop and monitor safety performance metrics (TRIR, EMR, near misses, observations) and produce regular reports and dashboards for executive leadership and project teams.
Collaborate with project management, quality and operations teams during pre-construction reviews to identify safety risks and integrate mitigation strategies into project plans.
Oversee emergency preparedness and response planning, including site-specific emergency action plans and coordination with local first responders.
Manage health and safety documentation, permit processes, and safety-related budgets; recommend investments in safety equipment and technology.
Champion safety culture initiatives and continuous improvement activities to promote worker engagement and ownership of safety across all levels of the organization.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Construction Management, Occupational Safety, Engineering or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
Minimum 710 years of progressive construction safety experience, including direct experience as a Safety Director or similar role on mid-rise, high-rise and multi-family projects.
Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA construction standards, local building codes, and industry best practices.
Professional certifications preferred: CSP, CHST, ASP, or equivalent; OSHA 30 (and OSHA 500 or 501 for trainers) highly desirable.
Proven experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.
Strong experience with fall protection, scaffolding, rigging, confined space, and heavy civil/construction site hazards.
Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence project teams and subcontractors.
Proficient with safety management software, incident reporting systems and Microsoft Office; experience with field inspection/audit tools a plus.
Ability to travel to job sites regularly and work flexible hours as required; valid drivers license.
Commitment to creating and sustaining a positive safety culture and measurable safety performance improvements.
