Job Title:
Safety Professional - Substation Construction Job site location is Batavia, NY for 4-5 month Substation construction project. Job Description The Safety Professional will serve as the full-time site safety representative on substation construction projects, acting in an owner-representative capacity while overseeing subcontracted field crews. This role focuses on safety oversight and management for new substation builds, substation upgrades, inside electrical work, and associated tie-ins for projects such as battery energy storage systems, solar, wind, and data centers. The Safety Professional will manage day-to-day health and safety activities on site, support incident reporting and prevention, and ensure subcontractors comply with all applicable safety standards and project requirements while traveling to project sites nationwide. Responsibilities Serve as the full-time on-site safety representative for substation construction and upgrade projects. Provide safety oversight and management for substation foundations, inside electrical work, and substation structures, including tie-ins for BESS, solar, wind, and data center projects. Act in an owner's representative capacity while overseeing subcontracted construction work. Oversee and support safety performance for field personnel, typically ranging from 1 to 25 workers per project. Monitor daily field activities to identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks on substation job sites. Ensure subcontractors follow all project-specific safety plans, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and walkthroughs of substation and inside electrical work areas. Document safety observations, inspections, and corrective actions using tablets and computer-based systems. Report safety activities, incidents, near misses, and corrective measures in a timely and accurate manner using IT systems. Support incident investigations and root cause analyses, and help develop preventive actions. Communicate safety expectations clearly to subcontractors and field personnel, and reinforce a strong safety culture on site. Coordinate and collaborate with project teams, field supervisors, and subcontractors to resolve safety concerns. Provide ongoing safety guidance and coaching to field personnel to promote safe work practices. Support the implementation and enforcement of site-specific safety programs and procedures. Travel to various substation project sites across the country as project needs require. Maintain accurate safety records and documentation for compliance and internal reporting. Essential Skills Proven substation safety management and oversight experience supporting a general contractor, EPC, or owner on construction projects. Demonstrated experience managing and overseeing subcontractor safety performance on construction sites. Strong knowledge of safety practices related to substation construction, inside electrical work, and related infrastructure. Ability to travel nationally to support multiple substation projects as needed. Proficiency with IT systems for reporting safety activities, incidents, and observations. Ability to effectively use tablets and computers for safety documentation and communication. Strong communication skills to interact with field personnel, subcontractors, and project teams. Ability to oversee and support safety for field crews ranging from approximately 1 to 25 personnel. Additional Skills & Qualifications CHST, STS, or STST certification (required or strongly preferred, as indicated). Experience providing safety oversight on new substation builds and substation upgrade projects. Background in safety oversight for projects involving BESS, solar, wind, or data center tie-ins is beneficial. Experience working in an owner's representative capacity on construction projects is advantageous. Strong organizational skills to manage documentation, reporting, and multiple project demands. Ability to adapt to changing project schedules, crew sizes, and site conditions. Work Environment This role is field-based and project-driven, with primary initial coverage at substation projects near Batavia, NY, where two active projects are located approximately 10 minutes apart. One project typically has a crew of about 15 personnel, while the second averages around 25 personnel. Coverage is generally required six days per week, with anticipated project durations of approximately 8 to 9 months and current work expected to run through June or July, depending on schedules. After completion of the Batavia assignments, the Safety Professional will travel to additional substation builds at various locations nationwide. The work environment centers on active construction sites for new substations and upgrades, including inside electrical work and substation structures. The role involves regular presence in outdoor and industrial settings, frequent walking of job sites, and close interaction with field crews and subcontractors. Work hours typically follow six working days per week, with project-specific schedules. The position uses tablets, computers, and other standard IT tools for reporting and communication. A monthly truck stipend and per diem aligned with GSA rates support travel-based work on these long-term substation projects. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Batavia, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $70.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
