Job Title:
Safety Manager Job Description The Safety Manager leads the safety function across multiple construction projects and business units, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations while fostering a proactive safety culture. This role manages and develops safety team members, oversees safety programs and inspections, and serves as a key technical resource for project teams. The Safety Manager analyzes safety data, drives continuous improvement, and partners closely with operations, subcontractors, and corporate risk management to reduce incidents and support a safe, high-performing work environment. Responsibilities Manage the workloads of direct reports based on project volume, project needs, and departmental responsibilities, and make informed staffing recommendations. Conduct regular check-ins and annual performance evaluations for all direct reports, providing clear feedback and guidance. Assess training and learning needs for safety team members and ensure they receive appropriate development opportunities. Train and support Safety Department members as needed, reinforcing best practices and consistent standards. Review career path goals with team members and provide coaching on career development within the safety profession. Participate in the retention and recruiting of Safety Department team members to build and maintain a strong safety organization. Manage outside safety consultant project needs and performance, ensuring quality and alignment with project requirements. Determine and fulfill the safety needs of multiple projects and business units, prioritizing resources effectively. Evaluate the inspection performance of other safety department members and project team members, and provide constructive feedback. Conduct on-site safety inspections independently using the Predictive Solutions System. Evaluate hazard and incident data to identify trends and create targeted focus on specific project and corporate safety needs. Set safety inspection criteria and expectations, then measure and evaluate performance against those standards. Mentor operations and site operations personnel in the safety inspection process to build field-level ownership of safety. Evaluate project compliance with federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety regulations and procedures. Identify and address safety needs and challenges associated with future project work during planning and preconstruction. Evaluate and address the safety performance of subcontractors working on construction projects. Review project safety inspections with site operations to ensure findings are understood and corrective actions are implemented. Regularly analyze and interpret inspection and incident data to identify business unit safety trends and recommend corrective actions. Distribute project safety inspections to key project team members and subcontractors to ensure visibility and accountability. Prepare and distribute open issue summaries and evaluations for projects and business units to track and close safety items. Research and evaluate current and future OSHA regulations to ensure projects remain compliant and proactive. Conduct or oversee third-party safety inspections independently as required. Lead crisis, accident, and incident response and investigations independently, documenting findings and follow-up actions. Develop, select, and deliver safety toolbox talks and project safety orientations effectively to diverse audiences. Evaluate and coach others on the delivery of toolbox talks and safety orientations to improve engagement and effectiveness. Enforce safety requirements with both general contractor and subcontractor workforce and supervision in the field. Evaluate project safety policies for effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement and standardization. Deliver "just in time" on-site safety training tailored to specific tasks, hazards, or emerging issues. Review and develop common and complex task Job Hazard Analyses independently to ensure risks are properly mitigated. Assist with safety planning as part of the preconstruction process, including risk assessments and control strategies. Lead selected subcontractor safety preconstruction meetings and address special needs for Site Specific Safety Plans. Participate in project safety and subcontractor meetings as needed to represent and advocate for safety priorities. Develop project safety orientations that address special client, site, or condition requirements. Elevate safety concerns appropriately and promptly when issues require higher-level attention or resources. Audit the use of project safety signage and provide recommendations for improvements and compliance. Audit and review project safety documentation requirements and implement improvements where needed. Research and obtain information to resolve safety-related issues independently, acting as a problem solver for complex situations. Identify or select special safety and protective equipment for projects independently, based on specific hazards. Collaborate with project teams to plan and execute project-wide safety stand-downs when necessary. Identify and arrange specific safety training to meet project or business unit needs, including specialized topics. Serve as a technical safety resource to all members of the safety department and site operations teams. Evaluate the overall inspection process performance and identify opportunities to improve consistency and impact. Develop and lead the execution of department-level corporate safety goals. Develop safety goals for assigned business units and monitor progress toward those goals. Conduct and develop in-house safety training programs to build internal capability and consistency. Identify corporate safety and protective equipment needs and support procurement decisions. Research and trial new safety-related products to enhance worker protection and program effectiveness. Prepare and deliver monthly safety summaries for assigned business units, highlighting trends, issues, and achievements. Act as the primary point of contact for key safety processes, such as Predictive Solutions or Toolbox Talks, within the safety department. Participate in corporate initiatives and committees outside of safety to integrate safety into broader business strategies. Create and maintain positive working relationships with project teams and subcontractors to support a collaborative safety culture. Respond to safety concerns from clients, tenants, or impacted members of the public in a timely and professional manner. Assist and collaborate with other members of the corporate Risk Management Team as needed. Participate in safety and construction professional organization meetings to stay current with industry best practices and trends. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience managing safety programs in a construction or industrial environment. Proven ability to lead and develop safety professionals, including performance management and coaching. Strong knowledge of federal, state, local, corporate, and client safety regulations and procedures, including OSHA standards. Experience conducting on-site safety inspections and audits, including the use of systems such as Predictive Solutions. Ability to analyze hazard, inspection, and incident data to identify trends and develop targeted corrective actions. Strong incident and crisis response skills, including leading investigations and implementing follow-up measures. Experience developing and delivering safety training, toolbox talks, and project safety orientations. Ability to independently develop and review Job Hazard Analyses for both common and complex tasks. Skill in evaluating and improving project safety policies, procedures, and documentation. Proficiency in identifying and specifying appropriate safety and protective equipment for various project conditions. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and enforce safety requirements at all levels. Ability to collaborate effectively with operations teams, subcontractors, and corporate functions. OSHA 30-Hour for Construction certification. First Aid and CPR certification. CHST, CSP, or an equivalent professional safety designation. Bachelor's degree in safety or a related field preferred. Additional Skills & QualificationsOSHA 500
certification preferred. Experience with EM 385 requirements and construction safety standards. Background in industrial or large-scale construction environments. Participation in safety or construction professional organizations. Experience managing outside safety consultants and third-party inspections. Ability to develop corporate and business unit safety goals and track performance. Experience researching and trialing new safety products and technologies. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently research and resolve complex safety issues. Ability to prepare clear written reports, summaries, and recommendations for leadership. Demonstrated success building positive relationships with project teams, subcontractors, clients, and the public. Work Environment This role operates primarily within an industrial construction environment, supporting a large-scale expansion project with significant visibility and impact. The Safety Manager spends substantial time on active construction sites, interacting closely with field operations, subcontractors, and project leadership. The work involves regular site walks, inspections, meetings, and training sessions in a dynamic setting where conditions can change rapidly. Office-based tasks include data analysis, report preparation, planning, and coordination with corporate risk management and other departments. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Daniel Island, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $55.00/hr.
