3+ years of safety experience on heavy civil construction projects.Position Overview:
We are seeking a proactive Safety Specialist to support safe execution of civil construction, site development, and demolition projects. The Safety Specialist will develop, implement, and monitor safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards, manage underground utilities safety, and promote a culture of hazard recognition and mitigation. This role requires field presence for inspections, incident investigation, training, and collaboration with project teams to reduce risk and improve safety performance.Key Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety plans, policies, and procedures in compliance with OSHA and company standards.Conduct regular site inspections and audits for civil construction, site development, grading, earthwork, underground utilities, and demolition activities to identify hazards and corrective actions.
Monitor and enforce compliance with regulatory requirements (OSHA, local codes) and company safety programs.
Perform incident investigations, root cause analysis, and prepare corrective action plans with follow-up to closure.
Deliver safety training and toolbox talks for field crews and subcontractors, including orientation, PPE, confined space, excavation, and shoring safety.
Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and subcontractors to integrate safety into planning and execution of work activities.
Develop and maintain safety documentation, permits, JHAs/JSA, inspection records, and reporting metrics.
Manage near-miss and hazard reporting systems and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce incidents and injuries.
Provide emergency response planning and support, including site evacuation procedures and first-aid/CPR coordination.
Support pre-construction safety planning and participate in project meetings to advise on constructability and risk control measures.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in construction safety, civil site development, or related industries with hands-on field presence.Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety best practices for excavation, trenching, confined spaces, fall protection, PPE, and demolition.
Experience with underground utilities installation, protection, and related hazard controls.
Familiarity with grading, earthwork operations, and associated machinery and risks.
Proven ability to conduct incident investigations, prepare reports, and implement corrective actions.
Excellent communication and training skills with experience delivering toolbox talks and safety orientations.
Ability to read civil/site plans and identify safety risks during planning and execution phases.
Certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour Construction, CPR/First Aid, and certifications like CSP, CHST, or ASP are a plus.
Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to project sites; physical ability to perform field inspections on active construction sites.
