Safety Manager / Director of Safety We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Safety Manager to join our trucking and transportation team in Nashville, TN on a temporary basis to provide coverage during an employee leave of absence. This position will support daily safety operations, regulatory compliance, driver engagement, and accident management functions to help ensure the company maintains a strong culture of safety and operational excellence. The ideal candidate will have experience in transportation safety, DOT/FMCSA compliance, driver relations, and administrative support within a fast-paced trucking environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assist with day-to-day safety department operations and compliance activities Monitor and maintain
DOT/FMCSA
compliance for drivers and fleet operations Review driver qualification files, MVRs, medical cards, and required documentation Track Hours of Service (HOS) compliance and ELD reporting Support accident and incident investigations, including documentation and follow-up Coordinate driver onboarding, orientation, and safety training programs Conduct safety audits and assist with corrective action plans Monitor CSA scores and assist in implementing improvement initiatives Communicate with drivers regarding safety performance, violations, and company policies Maintain accurate records and prepare safety-related reports Assist with workers' compensation claims and return-to-work coordination when needed Partner with operations and maintenance teams to support overall fleet safety Perform additional administrative and safety-related duties as assigned Qualifications Previous experience in transportation safety, fleet management, or trucking operations preferred Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and transportation safety regulations Experience with ELD systems and Hours of Service compliance Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to handle confidential information professionally Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and transportation management systems Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Preferred Qualifications Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Safety, Transportation, Business, or related field preferred Experience with safety platforms, compliance software, or fleet management systems Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods Occasional travel to terminals, yards, or accident locations may be required Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally Schedule & Duration Temporary assignment covering employee leave Monday through Friday schedule, with occasional after-hours availability as needed Benefits Competitive hourly pay or salary based on experience Opportunity to gain experience with a growing transportation company Potential for future opportunities based on business needs Western Express, Inc. is committed to a policy of Equal Employment Opportunity and will not discriminate against an applicant or employee based on race, color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, sex, pregnancy, age, physical or mental disability, veteran or military status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, or any other legally recognized protected basis under federal, state, or local law.
