Job Summary AZA Safety Consultants is seeking a hands-on and proactive Construction Safety Manager to support active trench, excavation, underground utility, and roadway construction projects throughout Southern California. This field-based role is responsible for conducting daily safety drive-bys, site audits, hazard assessments, and compliance inspections to ensure crews are working safely and in accordance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and company safety standards. The ideal candidate will have strong construction safety experience, knowledge of trench and excavation hazards, and the confidence to enforce safety requirements with foremen, crews, subcontractors, and project personnel. This position plays a key role in preventing incidents, correcting unsafe conditions, documenting safety concerns, and supporting a zero-incident jobsite culture. Duties Conduct daily construction safety inspections, site audits, and safety drive-bys on active trench, excavation, and underground utility projects. Inspect trenches and excavation areas for proper protective systems, including hydraulic shoring, trench boxes, sloping, benching, access/egress, spoil pile placement, and edge protection. Subpart P, Cal/OSHA Title 8, and applicable company safety standards. Review Job Hazard Analyses before work begins to ensure they are complete, signed, site-specific, and aligned with daily work activities. Confirm proper underground utility protocols, including 811 locate verification, potholing, hand-digging requirements, and safe excavation practices. Inspect traffic control plans, signage, cones, barricades, flagging, and work zones to ensure compliance with MUTCD and Cal/OSHA requirements. Conduct PPE audits and enforce corrective action when workers are not following required safety practices. Monitor housekeeping, access paths, equipment staging, material storage, chemical storage, and overall jobsite conditions. Audit toolbox talks and weekly safety meetings for attendance, relevance, documentation, and follow-up on corrective actions. Stop work when serious hazards are identified and coordinate with foremen or supervisors to correct unsafe conditions before work continues. Document safety observations, violations, corrective actions, and follow-up items in a professional and timely manner. Communicate with project managers, foremen, subcontractors, and crews to promote a strong safety culture on every jobsite. Requirements Proven experience in construction safety, site safety management, or field safety inspection. Hands-on experience with trench, excavation, underground utility, roadway, or civil construction projects strongly preferred. OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required. CHST certification strongly preferred. Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926
Subpart P and Cal/OSHA construction safety requirements. Ability to identify excavation hazards and understand protective systems such as hydraulic shoring, trench boxes, sloping, and benching. Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and take immediate corrective action when necessary. Strong communication skills with the ability to professionally enforce safety requirements with crews, foremen, and subcontractors. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required. Must be able to travel between multiple construction sites throughout Southern California. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus. Must be comfortable working in a field-based environment. Pay:
