Opportunity Overview:
The Safety Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive safety culture across all Boys & Girls Club of King County (BGCKC) club sites. This role ensures that every child, staff member, and volunteer operates in a safe, compliant, and nurturing environment in alignment with BGCKC's mission to inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety Program Development & Compliance Develop, implement, and continuously improve organization-wide safety policies, procedures, and protocols across all BGCKC club locations. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations including OSHA, Washington State L&I requirements, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) national safety standards. Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments at each club site and develop corrective action plans in response to identified hazards. Maintain and update the organization's Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), including protocols for fires, lockdowns, natural disasters, and medical emergencies. Incident Management & Reporting Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety incidents, near-misses, and emergencies across club sites. Investigate all accidents and incidents thoroughly; document findings and implement preventive measures to reduce recurrence. Maintain accurate and timely incident reporting records in compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational standards. Coordinate with BGCKC's insurance carrier and legal counsel on workers' compensation claims and liability matters. Training & Culture Design and facilitate engaging safety training programs for all staff and volunteers, including CPR/First Aid, mandated reporter protocols, youth protection training, and emergency response procedures. Champion a proactive safety culture in which all team members feel responsible for and empowered to promote physical and emotional safety for youth members. Partner with Club Directors and program staff to integrate age-appropriate safety practices into daily programming and activities. Provide onboarding safety orientation for all new employees and volunteers. Facilities & Environmental Safety Collaborate with the Facilities team to ensure all buildings, playgrounds, equipment, and vehicles meet safety standards and are regularly inspected and maintained. Oversee environmental safety concerns including allergen management, chemical storage, and sanitation practices. Manage safety-related vendor and contractor relationships, ensuring third parties adhere to BGCKC's safety standards while on-site. Leadership & Collaboration Serve as a member of the organization's crisis management team, providing guidance and coordination during critical incidents. Partner with HR and Program leadership to address behavioral safety concerns involving youth, staff, or volunteers. Prepare and present safety performance reports and recommendations to senior leadership and the Board of Directors as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field — or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 4 years of progressive experience in safety management, preferably in a youth-serving, nonprofit, educational, or multi-site environment. Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations, Washington State L&I requirements, and emergency management best practices. Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire). Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and sites simultaneously. Excellent communication and training facilitation skills; ability to engage diverse audiences including youth, frontline staff, and executive leaders. Commitment to BGCKC's mission and demonstrated cultural competency in working with communities of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Valid Washington State driver's license and ability to travel regularly between club sites. Preferred Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Youth Protection Professional designation. Experience with Boys & Girls Clubs of America or similar national youth development organizations. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Somali, or another language spoken by BGCKC communities. Experience developing trauma-informed safety frameworks in youth-serving settings.
