Position Summary The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist position plays an active role in supporting fire and life safety compliance across multiple college campuses. The candidate will assist with and perform building inspections, fire and life safety system checks, emergency preparedness activities, and preventative maintenance to ensure compliance with applicable fire, life safety, and occupational safety regulations. The candidate will support campus emergency response planning, evacuation procedures, fire protection equipment inspections, and related safety training initiatives. The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends and local travel. Duties & Responsibilities Performs preventative maintenance and inspection activities related to fire and life safety systems and equipment Conducts building and facilities inspections to assist with fire/life safety regulatory compliance and operational readiness Promotes worker health and safety through training, inspections, hazard identification, and regulatory compliance activities Inspects and monitors fire/life safety equipment and systems including fire extinguishers, AEDs, eye wash stations, emergency lighting, exit signage, evacuation maps, and related systems to ensure compliance Assists with fire drills, evacuation exercises, and training activities Responds to work orders for services, preventative maintenance, and inspections in the area of assignment/expertise Assists with incident investigations, hazard assessments, and corrective action tracking Maintains records, inspection logs, compliance documentation, and inventory associated with fire/life safety and emergency management programs Communicates with outside vendors and completes purchases and services, including quote requests and approving invoices following College policy and procedures Follows applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, standards, and regulations related to fire/life safety and occupational safety Assists with inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate stock and functionality are maintained Performs data entry input on a computerized maintenance management system; uses computers and applicable software, including facilities and maintenance software, word processing, databases, email, and calendaring Performs a full range of skilled fire, life safety, and occupational safety support services applicable to the area and provides general service Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor Job Requirements/Qualifications High School diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) and Three to Five years of skilled-level experience preforming related duties and demonstrated knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with the assignment and Valid Arizona Driver's License and demonstration of an acceptable record or An equivalent combination of certification, education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
Preferred:
Fire Inspector certification, FEMA/ICS training, OSHA certifications, CPR/AED instructor certification, or related fire/life safety certifications Knowledge of NFPA standards, emergency preparedness, and fire protection systems Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of fire/life safety principles, practices, and regulatory compliance requirements Knowledge of regulatory compliance principles and practices Skill in effective communication (both written and oral) Skill in conducting inspections and maintaining compliance documentation Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature Skill in problem solving Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing technical environment Ability to adapt and maintain professional composure in emergent and crisis situations Ability to maintain effective and positive working relationships Ability to operate relevant equipment required to complete assigned responsibilities for the position.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an non-traditional work setting; to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time; to frequently position self to perform duties, to move, transport, and/or position moderate (up to 50 pounds) amounts of weight; to operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; to operate various equipment required to perform job; may be required to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to effectively communicate to exchange information May be exposed to various hazardous conditions such as extreme heat, extreme cold, infectious disease, moving vehicles, electrical current, chemicals, tight spaces or high places, moving mechanical parts, etc.
