•Role Overview:
BEPC is seeking an experienced EHS Specialist III to support a dynamic and fast-paced biotechnology/manufacturing environment in San Diego, CA. This role is ideal for a hands-on EHS professional with strong expertise in hazardous waste management, chemical safety, biological waste handling, spill response, and regulatory compliance.
The selected candidate will partner cross-functionally to develop, implement, and maintain environmental health and safety programs while promoting a proactive culture of safety and environmental stewardship throughout the organization. Key Responsibilities:
EHS Program Management Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of EHS programs, policies, and procedures Assist with programs including Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Emergency Response, Waste Management, Ergonomics, and PPE Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, CUPA, local fire codes, and other applicable regulations Support implementation and continuous improvement of EHS management systems Compliance & Reporting Maintain EHS records, permits, inspections, and compliance documentation Prepare regulatory reports and support inspections and audits Generate safety metrics and reporting for leadership and safety committees Monitor evolving EHS regulations and recommend compliance improvements Hazardous & Biological Waste Management Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, including proper labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal Support chemical inventory management, spill response activities, and waste minimization initiatives Maintain compliance with San Diego County HAZMAT and CERS requirements Ensure proper handling and management of biological and chemical waste streams Risk Assessment & Incident Response Conduct EHS inspections, audits, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and risk assessments Recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) Participate in incident investigations involving injuries, spills, near misses, and environmental events Coordinate emergency response drills and support Emergency Response Team (ERT) activities Training & Communication Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees and new hires Promote a strong safety culture through awareness programs and communication initiatives Serve as a resource for employees and leadership regarding EHS-related matters Facilitate safety committee meetings and ongoing safety initiatives Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years of experience in an Environmental Health & Safety role Experience within biotechnology, medical device, laboratory, or manufacturing environments preferred Bachelor's Degree Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, CUPA, and related regulations Experience with hazardous waste, biological waste, chemical management, and spill response Familiarity with San Diego County HAZMAT regulations and the CERS portal Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and EHS audits Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
management systems HAZWOPER
certification First Aid/CPR/AED certification Knowledge of Lean, 5S, or Six Sigma methodologies Experience with EHS databases or compliance software Familiarity with animal care, husbandry, or IACUC environments Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds Ability to wear required PPE including respirators, safety glasses, lab coats, and safety shoes Comfortable working in office, manufacturing, laboratory, and vivarium environments May involve exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and biological agents Contract Details:
