Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)
Location:
Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach Project Duration:
Approximately 4-6 months (anticipated start mid-May)
Compensation :
$55-65/hr Position Summary The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for implementing and overseeing all safety and health requirements for a construction project at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. The SSHO will ensure full compliance with federal, state, and site-specific safety regulations, including
EM 385-1-1, OSHA
standards, and Navy/DoD safety requirements. Key Responsibilities Serve as the on-site safety representative with authority to enforce safety policies and stop work if unsafe conditions exist Develop, implement, and maintain the Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP) Conduct daily safety inspections and document findings, corrective actions, and follow-up Lead daily safety briefings (tailgate/toolbox meetings) and pre-task planning (AHA/JHA reviews) Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

requirements Coordinate with project management, subcontractors, and government safety representatives Maintain required safety documentation, logs, permits, and reports Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents; prepare detailed reports with corrective actions Monitor high-risk activities such as crane operations, excavations, and utility work Verify proper training, certifications, and PPE compliance for all personnel Project Scope Overview The SSHO will oversee safety for activities including: Demolition of pavement, utilities, and potential removal of existing railroad tracks Shallow excavations and trenching operations Grading, compaction, and asphalt paving Installation of light poles, including crane-assisted lifts Qualifications Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience, preferably on federal or military projects Demonstrated experience working under

requirements Current OSHA 30-hour (OSHA 30) certification (OSHA 30-Hour Construction preferred) CPR/First Aid/AED certification (current) Competent Person certifications (e.g., excavation/trenching, fall protection) strongly preferred Experience with crane safety and lift planning preferred Strong knowledge of hazard analysis (AHA/JHA) development and enforcement Excellent communication and documentation skills Work Conditions Field-based role requiring daily presence on an active construction site Exposure to heavy equipment, outdoor conditions, and active construction operations Must be able to walk uneven terrain, climb, and stand for extended periods Additional Requirements Ability to pass background checks and obtain base access for Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach Valid driver's license E04JI800pcjj409677t
