JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Project EHS Specialist assists in the overall administration of project EHS programs to maintain safe work environments. Positions typically utilized on large project sites, however, may assume total responsibility for EHS on smaller projects.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Support corporate and project-specific EHS initiatives. Provide independent troubleshooting and resolution based on broad and in-depth EHS technical knowledge. Conduct work area surveillance inspections, air sampling tests, and employee contractor EHS training programs. Accompany safety, health, environmental, and insurance inspectors on walkthrough tours. Document accidents, safety violations, and unsafe conditions. Promote project EHS awareness by controlling hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee activities through safety management and contacting supervisory personnel. Assist in supervision and administration of safety/first aid and rescue squad activities. Assume total responsibility for EHS operation when assigned to shift work. Assess level of risk and take action through training/awareness/planning. Lead or participate in Project EHS Kick-off Meeting. Participate in Project Field Execution Meetings. Lead or participate in development of Project EHS Plans. Lead or participate in Project Weekly Safety Meetings and periodically attend crew daily safety meetings (toolbox talks). Assist in case management by visiting potential area clinics and health facilities. Collaborate with Human Resources to set up accounts and develop relationships with local area clinics and health facilities. Case manage project incidents. Conduct OSHA 10 Hour Construction Safety and/or
MSHA 8/24
Hour Safety training and other necessary training. Monitor and assist subcontractors in the development and administration of their EHS Program. Maintain all consumable health and environmental protection supplies at a level sufficient to ensure no interruption of project activities. Assist in developing and implementing employee EHS on-boarding program to include new hire mentoring assignments. Assist in developing and implementing project ongoing EHS training program (with training matrix). Assist in developing emergency action plans (site evacuation, confined space, high angle, trench, chemical rescue, etc.). Conduct work area surveillance inspections, air sampling tests for confined space entry, property, damage and personal injury investigations. Track and document accidents, EHS violations, unsafe conditions/activities, near misses, and leading indicators. Perform incident root cause analysis if applicable. Issue confined area entry and "hot work" permits as required. Implement behavior-based EHS initiatives/audits. Implement and promote stop work authority with employees. Report project EHS status to project team, client, and corporate EHS Department. Review documentation to insure all required records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures, and implement appropriate corrective action as required. Assist in preparing written responses for EHS violation citations. Assist in developing and implementing logs for tool and equipment inspection. Review safety related journals, catalogs, etc. to keep abreast of changes/improvements in protective safety equipment, materials and gear. Serve as a guide/mentor to less experienced EHS professionals.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associates degree in occupational safety/health. (Significant additional EHS experience may be considered in lieu of degree.) At least five years of construction and/or industrial EHS experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced education and training/certification in safety management such as Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST), Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STSC) and OSHA 30 Hour/MSHA Experience preferred.
OSHA 500
is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES
Broad experience and knowledge of environmental health and safety industry practices. Advanced knowledge of construction and/or industrial EHS requirements, plus thorough understanding and ability to effectively promote compliance with federal, state, local and company regulations. Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to positively influence EHS behaviors. Proficiency with standard office software. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; capable of effectively presenting to audiences, large and small. Willingness and ability to adapt to rapidly changing environment and new challenges. Strong cultural sensitivity to manage relationships with people from diverse backgrounds. Strong leadership capabilities to deliver results and to strengthen the EHS culture. Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures essential. Proficiency with standard office software. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and coordinate multiple activities that are moderately to highly complex. Willing and able to travel as required. Willing and able to gain additional training, certificate, education, and clearances.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments with possible exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and all types of weather and temperature conditions. Occasional or frequent air travel with overnight stays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Manual dexterity, sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods of time; Frequent climbing stairs / ladders, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and crouching; Occasional work on ladders, scaffolding, or high structures; Visual acuity to read printed and electronic documents; Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common construction environment auditory stimuli; Lifting and / or exerting of force up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds of lifting / force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of lifting / force constantly to move objects; and Frequent driving of motor vehicles.
