Job Description
Panhandle Health District's Hayden office is in search of a full-time Environmental Health Specialist 1 to join our team. The Environmental Health Specialist 1 (EHS1) supports public health and environmental protection efforts through inspections, compliance monitoring, education, and community outreach. This position works with a variety of environmental health programs, which may include food safety, septic systems, public drinking water, swimming pools, daycare facilities, solid waste, vector control, and nuisance investigations. Responsibilities include conducting inspections, identifying and addressing environmental health risks, educating the public and regulated community on health regulations, collaborating with community partners, and helping ensure compliance with applicable laws and public health standards. This position serves as a developmental career pathway, with advancement to the next level (EHS2) upon successful completion of required training, credentialing requirements, and registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS).
Duties/Responsibilities:
Bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD from a college or university accredited in the United States Willingness to meet National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) requirements for the Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) Must take the NEHA credentialing exam within one year of being hired as an Environmental Health Specialist 1 Familiarity with data collection and storage procedures in the Environmental Health section, as well as basic knowledge of the relevant database systems In-depth understanding of potential exposures to severe weather, physical hazards, infectious diseases, toxic substances, and hazardous materials Strong oral and written communication skills for effective interpersonal interactions Skilled in the operation of computers and copiers Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and adept in data entry processes Valid driver's license (Idaho or Washington) or ability to obtain one if relocating National Incident Management System (NIMS)/Incident Command System (IS)100, 700 within one (1) month of employment

Due to the need for all Health Department personnel to respond to public health emergencies, the employee must be assessed for his/her ability to meet the physical demands of performing the following activities: Engage in the following movements: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and writing and repetitive motions. To move objects, exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly. Hearing ability sufficient to communicate effectively in person and over the phone.
