Job Title:
Safety Representative Job Description The Safety Representative provides onsite safety leadership and support across multiple active construction projects. This role promotes a strong, proactive safety culture, ensures compliance with OSHA and company safety standards, and proactively identifies and mitigates jobsite risks on large-scale education and public sector construction projects. Responsibilities Promote a strong, proactive safety culture across all assigned construction projects. Ensure contractor activities are properly pre-planned for safety through scope reviews, pre-task planning, and job hazard analysis (JHA) reviews. Verify subcontractor compliance with project-specific safety plans, procedures, and requirements. Conduct routine safety audits, inspections, and observations across job sites. Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns, and complete all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner. Provide safety training, coaching, and guidance to project teams, field staff, and subcontractors. Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety documentation, logs, and reports in accordance with company and regulatory requirements. Make clear, actionable recommendations to address unsafe conditions, behaviors, and processes. Support multiple projects simultaneously depending on project phase and workload, including large higher education and K-12 projects. Collaborate closely with field teams, subcontractors, and leadership to integrate safety into daily operations and project planning. Use Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word) to track safety activities, prepare reports, and communicate safety information. Participate in and support a dedicated safety team, contributing to continuous improvement of safety programs and practices. Essential Skills 3-5 years of onsite construction safety experience. Experience supporting large-scale construction projects; if experience is limited to single projects, those projects should range from approximately $100M to $150M. Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety plans. Deep understanding of jobsite safety protocols, including hazard identification and control measures. Ability to conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs), safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word. Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with field teams, subcontractors, and leadership. Demonstrated experience in construction safety and site safety within a general contractor or similar environment. Ability to interpret and apply health and safety laws and regulations in a construction setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications OSHA 30-hour safety training certification.OSHA 500
certification or similar advanced OSHA training. Professional safety certifications such as CSP, CHST, or comparable credentials. Education or formal training in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) or a related field. Experience with K-12, higher education, or healthcare construction projects. Experience in construction safety management, including development and implementation of safety programs. Familiarity with safety audit processes and tools, including digital safety platforms or systems. Experience using safety management systems and safety documentation tools such as safetynet or similar. Ability to work effectively as part of a dedicated safety team and support a strong safety culture. Interest in working on high-profile, large-scale construction projects with long-term pipelines across education and public sector work. Work Environment This is a 100% onsite construction role supporting large, complex projects, including major higher education renovations and additions, K-12 school projects, and public sector construction ranging from approximately $8M to $60M and beyond. The typical schedule consists of 8-10 hour days, with a start time between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM, averaging around 40 hours per week, with occasional Saturday work based on project demands. The Safety Representative reports directly to the Safety Manager and works alongside two other Safety Professionals as part of a dedicated safety team. The role involves regular presence on active construction sites, frequent site walks, safety audits, and interactions with field personnel and subcontractors. Standard office software, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word, is used for documentation and reporting. Mileage reimbursement is provided at the federal rate when traveling more than 60 miles round trip per day. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Detroit, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.10 - $62.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
