ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY - TECHNICIAN A

Materials Testing Consultants (MTC) provides geotechnical engineering, consulting and independent testing services to a broad spectrum of government, power, institutional and private clients, and has done so since 1968, always focused on the "trusted advisor" relationship with our clients, technical leadership on challenging projects, top-level service, and ethical business practices. Our primary service area includes the Great Lakes states through multiple offices and beyond with our traveling crews and mobile laboratories. We are affiliated with MATECO Drilling Company , with operations office located in Rockford, MI. MATECO is a geotechnical and environmental drilling contractor. Environmental Safety Technician:
You will travel to project sites to perform building materials and/or air quality testing prior to remediation, renovation, or demolition activities. Upon accurate completion of the tests, the results are documented and communicated to the project management team. During remediation, renovations or demolition activities, technicians travel to project sites to perform quality assurance air testing and to monitor contractor work for compliance with project specifications, conveying any deviations from specifications to the project team. This position is entry level but can be your start to a career path into industrial hygiene, environmental inspections & consulting and/or environmental project management.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Work environment primarily at building sites - occupied, or unoccupied and/or dilapidated, indoors and outdoors. Locations include active prisons and confined spaces. Proactive safety management while working with, or around, hazardous materials. Perform bulk material sampling and air testing. Assist Inspectors and Project Professionals in completion of site assessments. Complete daily report of observation and accurately record sample locations and/or test results. Produce technical reports for review. Professional communication with client representatives (supervisor, foremen, project managers, engineers, etc.) at project sites. Proper maintenance of equipment. Perform other duties or functions as assigned or requested. Out of town travel with overnight stays, 2-3 days a week. Comfortability with working in hazardous environments, such as prisons and abandoned buildings. Prioritize safety procedures and correct use of equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES
High School degree required. Further education/experience/degrees in Environmental Health & Safety, Public Health, Safety and Toxicology are preferred. Ability to travel and stay overnight for non-local projects, when necessary. Valid driver's license and good driving record. Asbestos Certification preferred. Effective communication skills required. Detailed oriented - analytical mindset required. High ethical standards required. Microsoft Office - Word, SharePoint, Outlook, Excel, Teams basic competency preferred. Sample collection and materials testing experience preferred. Construction experience or building maintenance preferred. Able to read construction drawings (blueprints) and project specifications preferred. Pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check.
