Must‑
Haves:
Valid Driver's License and ability to operate a Duke‑owned vehicle 1-3+ years of experience OR newly certified candidates looking to start a safety careerDOT & RCRA
certification Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, RCRA) Understanding of hazardous material and chemical waste management Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and manipulate 400 lb. drums Physically able to wear respiratory protection and PPE Basic computer skills for records, data access, and reporting Strong written and verbal communication skillsPlusses:
Associate's Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field Basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical properties Experience in hospital, research lab, or university environments Exposure to radiological, pharmaceutical, or universal waste handling Day‑to‑Day:
Collect, segregate, and manage hazardous chemical waste across university and hospital sites Handle hazardous pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal waste streams Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and RCRA regulations Perform routine safety inspections and equipment calibration Partner with Duke departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks Maintain documentation, records, and compliance reports Work in environments ranging from office settings to high‑hazard/IDLH conditionsJob Description:
