Job Description

Job Title:
Environmental Health and Safety Specialist Job Description The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist proactively engages employees and business partners to promote a strong culture of safety and environmental responsibility. This role evaluates and improves safety practices across operations, supports compliance with regulatory requirements, and partners with cross-functional teams to develop and implement effective EHS programs. The specialist analyzes data, processes, and workflows to reduce risk, prevent injuries, and enhance both environmental compliance and human safety. Responsibilities Proactively engage employees and business partners to ensure they have the tools, resources, and guidance needed to follow best practices and foster a culture of safety for all. Audit and evaluate equipment, work environments, chemical usage, and employee and contractor behaviors to verify compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) best practices. Conduct follow-up activities on EHS audits and evaluations to confirm corrective actions are implemented and sustained. Partner with Operations to conduct Job Hazard Analyses and Risk Assessments, identifying potential hazards and recommending appropriate controls. Create, document, and implement standard safety operating procedures, training programs, and job aids that support EHS initiatives and promote safe work practices. Develop and deliver safety training that educates employees and contractors, prevents injuries, and reduces incident rates. Establish and maintain best practices for regulatory and internal EHS compliance across operational areas. Collaborate with operational leadership to review EHS results, provide guidance on initiatives, and recommend cross-functional solutions involving Store Operations, Corporate, Distribution, and Manufacturing. Influence and coach leaders and team members to champion necessary changes that enhance environmental compliance and human safety. Measure the effectiveness of EHS initiatives, analyze results, and develop corrective actions to address gaps or emerging risks. Guide or directly execute the implementation of EHS improvements and corrective actions across relevant departments. Analyze data, work processes, workflows, equipment, and department layouts to identify opportunities to improve EHS performance while balancing people, service, and productivity needs. Lead or participate in root cause analyses and incident investigations to determine underlying causes and prevent recurrence. Document and communicate findings from incident investigations and audits, and track completion of recommended actions. Complete special EHS projects and assignments as needed to support organizational goals and continuous improvement. Essential Skills 3 or more years of Environmental, Health and/or Safety experience at the Coordinator, Analyst, or Department Manager level. Demonstrated experience in EHS within distribution and/or manufacturing environments. Hands-on experience conducting root cause analyses for safety and environmental incidents. Proven experience leading or supporting incident investigations and implementing corrective actions. Strong knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and safety procedures. Experience with EHS management practices and environmental health and safety programs. Familiarity with industrial hygiene concepts and practices. Ability to effectively communicate with, influence, and make recommendations to all levels of management and across functional areas. Demonstrated systems aptitude, including the use of root cause analysis software or other EHS-related systems. Ability to analyze data, workflows, and processes to identify risks and recommend improvements. Strong organizational and follow-through skills to ensure completion of EHS initiatives and corrective actions. Additional Skills & Qualifications Store Operations experience, particularly in environments that interact with distribution and manufacturing functions. Bachelor's degree in a related field such as Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a similar discipline. CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), or progress toward obtaining it. ASP (Associate Safety Professional) certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), or progress toward obtaining it. CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) certification from the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), or progress toward obtaining it. Experience developing and delivering EHS training materials, job aids, and standard operating procedures. Ability to influence change and coach others to adopt improved safety and environmental practices. Strong collaboration skills and experience working with cross-functional teams in corporate, distribution, manufacturing, and store operations. Work Environment The role supports a mix of operational environments, including distribution and manufacturing facilities and store operations. The specialist regularly partners with operations teams and leadership in these settings to conduct audits, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments. Work involves frequent interaction with equipment, chemicals, and production or distribution processes, requiring adherence to established safety procedures and the use of appropriate safety tools and systems. The position may involve moving between office areas and operational floors, reviewing workflows, department layouts, and processes to improve EHS performance. Standard business hours typically apply, with flexibility as needed to support incident investigations, training sessions, and special projects in operational environments. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Rochester, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $48.00/hr.
