Job Description Job Title:
Safety Specialist Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the site's Occupational Safety Programs, including Incident Reporting Program, Site Security Program, Ergonomic Program, Behavioral Based Safety Program, Emergency Response Program.
  • Lead the life-critical Permit to Work Programs (Hot Work/ Confined Space/ Lock Out Tag Out, Line Break, and High Work)
  • Support site management for compliance with PSM and RMP requirements.
  • Lead, participate, and coordinate Root Cause Analysis process.
  • Lead and participate in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) assessments, hazard determinations, and implementation of controls.
  • Investigate/report industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine causes and preventive measures.
  • Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes including
OSHA / ANSI / NFPA.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
  • Conduct or coordinate worker new-hire and ongoing training in areas such as safety regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
  • Participate in plans and specifications for construction of new machinery or equipment to determine if all safety requirements have been met.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational illnesses and accidents.
  • Coordinate with HR and medical professionals as needed to ensure routine employee medical evaluations are completed.
  • Track and maintain all relevant data for health, safety, and security.
  • Ensure that all OSHA required logs and reporting is completed accurately and on-time.
  • Support site staff and the Director of EHSS with gathering necessary data, sampling, etc. for any environmental regulatory reporting.
  • Support site staff and the Director of EHSS with the management of any hazardous and specialty waste management systems to ensure timely disposal at permitted waste disposal facilities, including the submittal of waste disposal information to the Accounting Department.
  • Ensure that provisions of the EHSS Management System are established, maintained, and implemented.
  • Lead, maintain, and participate in the preparation of EHS procedures, manuals, audits, and reports.
  • Lead and/or participate, as needed, in Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) for new and existing processes.
  • Inform and update site leadership regarding existing or potential issues and regulatory requirements impacting EHS performance.
  • Support operations to create a culture of functional excellence, accountability, professionalism and commitment to company values and standards.
  • Interact professionally with production personnel and other departments, including Production, Commercial, Customer Service, Shipping, Receiving, Supply Chain, Laboratory, Engineering, and Finance.
  • Be available after hours for plant assistance by phone or in the plant.
  • Complete other tasks as directed by the Director of EHSS and/or the Site Lead.
Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements:
  • Associates of Science with a focus on Occupational Safety or related degree required; or other certifications in lieu of a formal degree (i.e. Associate Safety Professional or Occupational Hygiene and Safety Tech)
  • Minimum three to five (3-5) years' experience working in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States The following skill sets are preferred:
  • Trained in Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, OSHA, NFPA and ANSI Standards
  • Experience in leading and participating in HAZOPs, PHAs, JSAs, and RCAs
  • Experience in Behavioral Based Safety/Employee Involvement Safety Programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communications
  • Proven data analysis and critical thinking skills
  • Proven self-starter with urgency for delivering results.
