Our platform integrates cutting-edge computational methods, high-throughput screening, and synthetic biology to engineer multifunctional proteins that address some of today's most pressing therapeutic challenges. As a fast-paced, mission-driven startup, we offer the opportunity to make a direct and lasting impact on the future of therapeutic innovation. About the Role We are seeking a highly organized, proactive Senior Lab Manager to serve as both the strategic architect and hands-on "fixer" for our laboratory ecosystem. This role is responsible for establishing our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) compliance programs from scratch, securing critical city and state operational permits, and executing a seamless laboratory relocation with zero-to-minimal downtime. Once the new facility is operational and compliant, you will own its ongoing function: managing procurement and inventory systems you designed, maintaining our regulatory compliance posture, overseeing equipment lifecycle and vendor relationships, and serving as the operational backbone that enables our scientific team to work without interruption. This role reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and works in close coordination with executive leadership and the scientific team. As Accipiter's first dedicated operations hire, you will have direct visibility into company strategy and meaningful input into how the operational infrastructure of the company is built. Work Location & Schedule This is a full-time, on-site position based at our laboratory facility in the Eastlake neighborhood of Seattle. The hands-on nature of this role spans laboratory operations, equipment management, regulatory inspections, and facility oversight. Remote work is not available for this position. Core hours are Monday through Friday 10-3; some flexibility in start and end times is available outside of critical operational windows.
Key ResponsibilitiesDaily Lab Operations, Purchasing & Inventory Consumable Purchasing:
Oversee and execute the end-to-end procurement of all laboratory consumables, reagents, and PPE. Manage vendor relationships, negotiate service contracts, and optimize supply chains to ensure uninterrupted scientific workflows.
Inventorying:
Design, implement, and maintain a robust inventory management system for common stocks, chemicals, and hazardous gases. Ensure stock levels are seamlessly tracked and maintained through the transition period to prevent operational bottlenecks.
Equipment PMs & Maintenance:
Facilitate the full lifecycle of scientific instrumentation by scheduling and overseeing routine preventative maintenance (PMs), repairs, and specialized calibrations (e.g., pipettes).
Asset Tracking:
Establish and maintain a centralized digital log of all equipment service records, PM histories, and manufacturer warranties.
Budget Management:
Track and manage day-to-day operational spending against approved budgets; prepare procurement forecasts and support COO authorization of capital expenditures for instrumentation and safety hardware.
New Employee Lab Onboarding:
Own the onboarding process for incoming scientific staff, including safety training, equipment orientation, access credentialing, and introduction to lab systems and protocols.
Regulatory Compliance & EHS Management Permit Acquisition:
Actively prepare and submit applications for the State of Washington Business License, City of Seattle Business License, and State Alcohol Use Permit.
Fire & Safety Compliance:
Lead the 3-month application process for Seattle Fire Department Permit 8002 (Laboratory below MAQ) and Permit 7501 (Non-flammable Cryogens).
EHS Leadership:
Assume or delegate the core roles of Environmental Health and Safety Officer (EHSO), Biological Safety Officer (BSO), and Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO).
Safety Documentation:
Author and maintain all foundational lab safety manuals, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), Biosafety Exposure Control Plan (BECP), Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP).
Hazardous Waste Management:
Obtain a Site Identification Number (ID#) from the EPA/WA State Dept of Ecology to grant the facility permission to generate hazardous waste.
Logs and Postings:
Maintain the OSHA Needlestick Log and ensure all federal, state, and city compliance posters are visibly displayed.
Facility Logistics Space Mapping & Inventory:
Oversee the physical mapping of the new facility, chemical inventory cataloging, and equipment tagging/crating.
Chain of Custody:
Implement rigid protocols for the safe transfer of high-value instrumentation, hazardous chemicals, and temperature-controlled biological samples.
Waste & Facilities Vendor Management:
Oversee ongoing service relationships with biohazardous waste transporters, document shredding providers, and PPE laundry services; ensure vendor compliance with King County and state disposal requirements.
Facility & Infrastructure Liaison:
Serve as the primary operational point of contact with building management for loading dock access, HVAC integration, utility scheduling, and facility maintenance requests.
Qualifications Education:
B.S. or M.S. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field.
Experience:
5+ years in laboratory operations or management, with preferred industry experience participating in at least one laboratory relocation.
Certifications:
Prior training or certification in RCRA, DOT, and IATA is highly desirable.
Mindset:
A true "problem solver" with a "fixer" mentality—equally comfortable drafting an institutional safety plan or picking up a wrench to secure a temperamental freezer.
