Over a thirty-year period, industrialist Norton Simon (1907-1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum's galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year. The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Easily accessible by public transportation, the Museum also offers its employees free parking, as well as free admission to the Museum anytime, and discounts in the store and café. Summary This part-time position conducts patrols, monitors the property at designated posts, and assists in the operation of the Security Department. This is a great opportunity for retirees, including those recently retired from the military. Qualifications Requires excellent judgment, good communication skills; ability to communicate professionally and tactfully with Museum patrons and staff from all organizational levels. Position requires the ability to work under pressure and to react appropriately to any situation. Must be skilled at multi-tasking and performing simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities. Requires wearing a uniform and adherence to the Museum uniform and grooming standards. Responsibilities Assists the Security Management group with a variety of security tasks including: Ensures the museum environment is safe for all patrons, employees, and other visitors by preventing theft, vandalism, and hazardous activity Enforces museum safety and security policies and regulations as directed Monitors employees entering and exiting the building, checking packages, directing vendors and visitors Conducts patrols as assigned and remains vigilant at all times, communicating observations to security control and security management Remains flexible and collaborative, assisting with a variety of projects and tasks as directed Arrives on time and has consistent attendance Physical Requirements Performance of essential functions requires remaining alert at all times, regular moderate physical mobility and exertion in walking, climbing stairs, and standing for several hours. Security Officers are required to work outdoors and in occasional inclement weather. Work may require strenuous physical activity related to responding to emergencies. Must be able to bend, twist, reach, and lift up to 30 pounds. Schedule Must be available to work up to 5 days per week on days selected by security management, up to 29 hours per week. Work schedule involves evening and weekend hours, and some holiday shifts including all major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's).
