Description Position Summary Responsible for supervising parks safety and security, educating and informing the public of park rules, regulations and city ordinances, and securing grounds and facilities each evening. Serving as a park ambassador, which includes assisting the public with questions, concerns, directions, information on park facilities, programs, events, activities, and other park functions. This role will be highly visible on park grounds and facilities, reporting and deterring vandalism, deterring and reporting unruly behavior, assisting with shelter reservations, and other general park safety, security, and informational operations as necessary. Essential Functions Non-law enforcement position, general grounds and facility safety and security.
Serves as supervisor of the park security team. Ensures the security team is following standard operating procedures. Assists with scheduling of the security team and coordinating schedule changes.
Attends safety and security briefings with park administration on a regular basis. And communicates the weekly safety bulletin to the security team. Communicates with the police department on a regular basis to keep them up to date on park security concerns and a process to communicate with police during incidents or security concerns in parks. Educates, promotes and informs park users at all parks of rules, regulations, and applicable city ordinances. Works varying shifts, but primarily evenings and weekends when daily maintenance crews are not onsite. Travels from park to park in a provided vehicle throughout the city a minimum of two times per shift (more if needed, directed to and/or if time allows) and performs a thorough sweep and inspection of all park grounds and facilities.
Inspects shelters & enforces capacity limits, inspects restrooms, playgrounds, athletic fields and courts, picnic areas, parking lots, walking trails, maintenance areas, dog park, and other park grounds and facilities for unsafe conditions, unruly behavior, vandalism, overall safety and security, large groups without permits at shelters, athletic facilities or other park areas. Keeps park supervisors and park administration advised of potential safety issues, security concerns, non-compliance of park rules and regulations, vandalism issues, park patron complaints or safety concerns, etc. Answers questions, gives directions, provides park information on areas, facilities, events, programs and other activities to park patrons as necessary. Assists park administration staff with posting park facility rental information, safety and informational signage, or other tasks as necessary.
Expected to approach park patrons not following rules and regulations and use discretion to inform and educate in a calm and reasonable manner. The Park Security Supervisor, or any security team member, should use caution and is not expected to approach potentially dangerous situations, individuals, or groups. If conditions warrant and are deemed necessary by the security team member, they may contact law enforcement, EMS, etc. to address any potential and/or immediate dangerous situation or situation the security team member does not feel comfortable addressing. Contacts Park Supervisors for issues found on park grounds or facilities. Deputy Parks Director and Parks Director will serve as back up contacts. Other duties as assigned and/or necessary. Essential Competencies Have some general supervisory background and the ability to lead a group of employees effectively and professionally. Feel comfortable dealing with confrontation professionally and comfortable in security situations. Is able to convey a positive image to the public and stay calm during potential difficult situations. Able to clearly and effectively communicate to staff members and the public in a calm and reasonable manner. Manages resources to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
Recognizes the need and effectively educates and informs park users of rules, regulations and applicable city ordinances. Requirements Special Requirements Must feel comfortable and show confidence to, in a calm and reasonable manner, approach the public to inform, notify and explain park rules, regulations, and ordinances. And have the competencies to defuse potentially difficult situations and report any incidents on park grounds and facilities. Position is expected to inspect and secure multiple park facilities and grounds on foot. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Work Experience Requirements Experience in parks and recreation or related field with facility and grounds management experience preferred. Other types of experience such as law enforcement, grounds and facility security, public resource management, etc. is also preferred. Education Requirements Must be a High School graduate or equivalent. Work Environment and Physical Demands Work is typically performed outside on park grounds, sometimes in difficult weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold, rain, etc.). Works in close proximity with the public as well as with park personnel. Must be able to traverse all parts of park grounds and facilities on foot, including uneven terrain, park trails, etc. Summary Applications will be accepted through February 27, 2026 or until all positions are filled.
