Salary Range:
$47,411.00•$57,879.00 SUMMARY•Provide law enforcement services to the school, school grounds and areas adjacent to the school by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Maintains a visible presence to deter crime and violence. Responds to emergencies on school grounds (fights, threats, intruders, medical emergencies). Enforces local and state criminal and motor vehicle laws. Investigates reported/suspected crimes. Assumes control at traffic accidents to maintain traffic flow, assist accident victims, and investigate causes of accidents. Investigates illegal or suspicious activities of persons, quells disturbances, and arrests law violators. Makes written court worthy reports/documentation of incidents. Locates and takes persons into custody on arrest warrants. Serves summonses when appropriate. Searches and assists in locating missing persons. Testifies in State or Federal Court, or before a Grand Jury as needed. Notifies supervisors of any unusual circumstances or incidents. Builds trust with students, staff and parent through meaningful relationship. Acts as a positive role model. Counsel students informally on issues like bullying, conflict and peer pressure. Teaches classes or gives presentations on subjects, such as drug/alcohol awareness, violence prevention and internet safety/cyberbullying. Works closely with administrators and counselors and helps conduct lockdown/evacuations drills. Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments and EMS when response is needed to a school. Confer with the principal to develop plans and strategies to prevent and/or minimize dangerous situations on or near the campus or involving students at school-related activities. Perform duties as determined by the principal other than those regularly assigned to school personnel such as lunchroom or hall duty. (Nothing herein is intended to preclude the SRO from being available in areas where interaction with students is expected.) Take law enforcement action as necessary and notify the principal of the school as soon as possible; whenever practicable, and advise the principal before requesting additional enforcement assistance on campus and undertake all additional law enforcement responsibilities at the principal's direction. Coordinate with the principal and be responsible for law enforcement and security activity at extra•curricular events as determined by the principal.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
•This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
•To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EXPERIENCE
•High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
LANGUAGE SKILLS
•Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write court worthy routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Must be proficient in the English Language.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
•Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
•Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
•Valid Louisiana Motor Vehicle Operator's License; proof of residency of St. Tammany Parish (voter registration card); birth certificate (minimum age of 21 years); and Social Security Card. P.O.S.T. Level 1 Certification. Maintain firearms qualifications in accordance with St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office policy. Criminal Patrol FTO Certification. Must possess the ability to obtain the SRO Certification within one year of acceptance of the Position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
•The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or run. Must have the ability to lift and drag a minimum of 100 pounds. Deputy is required to wear a duty rig which weighs on average between 20-25 pounds and is preferred to wear a bullet proof vest weighing on average 5 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
