Job Description

SAFETY OFFICER
— 2ND SHIFT Safety Department | Full-Time | Non-Exempt | 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM | Sat-Fri (Wed & Thu off)
JOB SUMMARY
The Safety Officer is responsible for the implementation of all policies regarding the safety and security of Brookgreen Gardens, its collections, and associated support facilities and buildings. This position ensures the safety of guests, staff, and volunteers while providing assistance that supports a high-quality guest experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Perform patrol and other assigned duties within the public areas of Brookgreen Gardens Provide assistance to guests, volunteers, and staff as needed Monitor and operate remote security systems, CCTV, UHF radio, telephones, and alarm systems from the Communications Center Identify potential safety hazards and ensure corrective action is taken Respond to calls for service and administer first aid when necessary; this position frequently serves as a first responder Follow weather alert protocols and assist with visitor and staff safety during inclement weather Complete training to remove and relocate snakes and other small animals as needed Work special events as assigned and provide shift coverage as needed to ensure adequate staffing Complete incident reports accurately and in a timely manner
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of electronic security and communications systems, or demonstrated ability to learn Effective oral and written communication skills Strong interpersonal skills with a hospitable, professional demeanor toward guests and coworkers Commitment to excellence in work performance and relationships with colleagues Sound judgment and the ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations Computer literacy and ability to recall and apply information accurately Good physical and mental health; able to lift a minimum of 60 lbs Comfort working outdoors and in proximity to reptiles and other wildlife
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent Valid South Carolina driver's license Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) Flexibility to work varying shifts, including weekends and holidays Must pass background investigation and drug screening upon hire
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is an active, outdoor role. The Safety Officer must be physically able to perform the following throughout each shift: Frequent walking, standing, bending, pulling, and lifting (minimum 60 lbs) Operation of vehicles and two-way radios across a large property Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, dust, fumes, and noise Potential contact with reptiles and nuisance or injured wildlife Pre-employment drug screen and background check required upon hire.
