Job Description
Campus Security Safety Officer Garrison Command Provost Marshal Office Camp Murray, WA This recruitment is open on an internal basis only to permanent State employees of the Washington Military Department. Under the direction of the Provost Marshal and Deputy, overseeing the Security Division within the Provost Marshal Office that is responsible for providing 24/7 installation security and access control.
Some responsibilities include:
Manage the security program and staff, providing 24/7 installation security and access control to Camp Murray military installation. Direct and coordinate all requirements for the security program, ensuring personnel are resourced, trained, and qualified to perform their duties. Responsible for budget and administrative duties in support of the security program. Responsible for security duties as needed, position is required to carry a service firearm Write, review, update, and implement security policies and procedures for the security program.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Five years of experience in work such as security guard, correctional officer, store investigation, police officer, police reserve officer, military police, or other law enforcement work. AND One year of lead and/or supervisory experience.
Note:
A certification of successful completion of a basic law enforcement training program approved by Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission; or a certificate of completion in a police or reserve academy or military training program will substitute for one year of the three years of the required experience.
DESIRED Experience:
One year of professional level experience managing a security program.
Certification:
Basic First Aid & CPR Skills, Abilities and competencies to: Communicate with the public, other employees, and converse by radio and telephone as necessary to ensure quick response to security related situations. Understand and follow applicable laws, regulations, and other standards to establish and / or maintain a safe work environment. Handle highly stressful or adverse situations, make good decisions, work calmly and accurately, and help calm others. Use of senses and reasoning to gather information and make independent determinations regarding ongoing security issues. This also involves the ability to think and respond appropriately when quick / decisive action is required in emergency / stressful situations. Read, understand, communicate and abide by applicable department policies / procedures, state / federal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations associated with assigned security duties. Gather information, develop accurate written incident / investigative reports and follow up on security incidents. This includes the ability to interview, obtain and accurately document statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and / or confidential informers. Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, or similar program to develop documents in support of programs objectives. Basic understanding of computer-supported and automated security program operations. Proficiencies Understanding of Washington State purchasing rules and ethics. Create bulleted and numbered lists, indent and align paragraphs, and use bordering and shading features. Basic understanding of computer-supported and automated security program operations. Physical Demands Routinely work a 40-hour week to provide ongoing customer and program support. Screen incoming traffic to assess required authorization to access the installation. This includes reading license plates, verifying picture identification, and observing occupants to detect suspicious/dangerous actions, items, or other violations that would negate entrance to the installation. Provide basic first aid and CPR, as needed, until arrival by supporting emergency response units. Adequate hearing to decipher radio traffic, vehicle noise, understand occupants' responses, detect warning sounds/alarms, ascertain sound direction, and recognize potential dangers. Walk or stand for long periods of time while working at a specific post, directing traffic, and conducting vehicle searches and other patrols. Work outside in all types of inclement weather. Full range of body motion and ability to use defensive tactics Manual Dexterity - Writing, light keyboarding, and use of a personal computer/software related to word processing. May require periods of great physical effort in completing essential functions and/or responding to security incidents.
Character:
Security staff are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of agency personnel and visitors by controlling and monitoring ingress and egress through the access control points on Camp Murray, conducting routine patrols, and responding to security incidents on the installation. As such it is imperative that security guards have basic character traits of honesty, courtesy, tact, cooperation, and professional appearance.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Compensation :
Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.
Must successfully complete a pre-employment personal history and background investigation, including a polygraph exam and psychological testing. These checks/tests are required due to the nature and security requirements of the job. Applicants are required to complete and sign a WMD Personal History Statement" and "Waiver and Authority for Release of Information" form. Candidates will not have access to any investigative materials and files. Must be willing and able to participate in periodic background checks in accordance with department policy. Failure to successfully complete any required background check may be cause for termination. Must report all arrests to appointing authority, within 24 hours, or prior to their scheduled work shift, whichever occurs first.
CAC CARD REQUIREMENTS
Must successfully pass the appropriate background check and obtain/maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC) required to access DoD computer systems or security applications. Must be willing to sign a release of information and shall not have access to any investigative materials and files. The processing of background checks can take up to six months post-employment. Failure to successfully pass a background check may be cause for termination.
DRUG & ALCOHOL TESTING AND USE
Willing not to use or be in possession of illegal narcotics, according to federal standards, or controlled substances while on or off duty. Willing and able to be free from excessive alcohol consumption Willing and able to pass drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspicion testing. Failure to successfully pass drug/alcohol testing is cause for termination.
MEDICAL EXAMINATION
Willing and able to participate in and pass a pre-employment medical examination and periodic medical examinations in accordance with program requirements. Must be able to discriminate between vivid red and green colors.
LEGALLY CARRY A FIREARM/WEAPONS QUALIFICATIONS TRAINING
Must be legally able to possess a firearm and ammunition, as well as willing to carry and use the firearm in a safe and justifiable manner. Must successfully complete prescribed firearms qualifications training within the 6-monthprobationary or trial service period. Must be willing and able to successfully complete mandatory follow-up training and annual weapons qualification requirements.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST
(PAT): Able to participate in and pass a pre-employment physical ability test and annual re-certification test in accordance with program requirements.
SHIFT WORK
Position is subject to shift work, the incumbent must be willing and able to work nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on a call back basis as program activities require. The incumbent must also be willing and able to work beyond established core hours/days when necessary to accomplish program activities and requirements, including responding to emergency/security situations in a reasonable period.
TELEWORK
This position is eligible for limited telework. The incumbent will work with their supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance between remote and in person work based on operational need and employee preference. Reporting to the workstation for work activities or participating in-person meetings will be required.
DRIVER'S LICENSE
Valid to drive in the State of Washington. Must meet requirements of the REAL ID Act effective October 1, 2020.
UNIFORMS
Must be willing to wear uniforms provided by the Department.
AUTOMATED SECURITY
Able to maintain proficiency on all automated security equipment and programs.

Willingness to work around military facilities, personnel, and equipment. Completion of a polygraph exam is part of the selection process. No possession of anabolic steroids within the last three years. No felony convictions (convictions under the age of 18 may be considered on a case-by-case basis). No misdemeanor involving theft, crimes of violence, larceny, moral turpitude, sex offenses, or controlled substances (convictions under the age of 21 may be considered on a case-by-case basis). No DUI, reckless driving or hit-and-run convictions within the last three years. No domestic violence convictions.
